He still hasent came out of a coma yet .
Yeah I just talked to a buddy of mine I go to school with and he said to stay away from 600cc bikes for a first-timer. The thing is, I can't afford to buy a shit bike then sell it and buy again after a year, which is what he recommended. Sorry to hear about your friend broham. Hope he comes out soon.

Wow, thats cheap. I agree about the cocky thing. I like to think I have enough self control not to get in over my head, but unfortunately sh|t happens and sometimes its out of your hands.

I wouldn't however reccomend the R6 as a first bike but do as you wish.

The bikes you listed are all good bikes but I would stay away from the Buell and the Triumph just for reliability factor. I also suggest you look at used bikes over new, because you are going to drop it (everyone does) and its easier to walk off a used bike being dropped than a new one
Thanks Night. I am looking used as my funds don't allow for anything else. All I hear is that I will drop/wreck it eventually and thats scary. What would you recommend thats around 600cc thats fits the criteria I listed above?

And i also have other vehicles insured through the same company, which takes off a little also. Also, you should be able to pick up a nice used 600 cc sport bike for around 5 grand. Any of the Japanese 600cc sport bikes are nice. Also, depending on your age, and what you want the bike for, is helpful in determining what kind you want. If you want something that will haul ass and don't mind being slouched down to reach the bars, get a 600cc Japanese sport bike. If you just want an inexpensive cruiser, get a Nighthawk, Shadow, 750 or something like that. If it's your firts bike, be sure to get a used one, because it will more than likely get dropped or wrecked. Also, insurance is not really expensive at all if you just have liablity. That's the only thing i had when i had less expensive bikes. Now that i've got a bike worth over 7 grand(actually over 10 grand new), i'd be extremely irritated if i wrecked it badly or it got stolen, and did'nt have it fully insured.
Yeah what I'm looking for is something that handles well, has great reliability, and is decently quick, nothing outrageously fast. I want a bike that is foregiving obviously me being a first-time rider.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am 21 years old and depending on how much I pay for the bike, I'll think about not having collision.

a lot of 01 and 02 r6 are pretty cheap due to the 03-05 that came out with a different design. but with $5k, u shouldnt have any issues finding a nice used bike

Actually I'd rather spend the least amount I can. That way I don't have to worry about collision/comprehensive insurance coverage.

What do you think of the Kawasaki EX500?

if you really want a beginner bike and dont want to pay alot, my brother bought a ninja 250. Its still quick, but nothing like the 600's out there. Its very forgiving for a bike, which is what you want when your a beginner. also, for the beginner bikes, they hold their value really well, my brother bought his for 2,500 and then sold it for 2,800 and he put nothing into it. he had it for a year then sold it to get a bigger bike. Plus you will have no problem selling it either. because there are a ton of people looking for beginner bikes.

insurance really isnt that expensive, especially if u got multiple vehicle coverage. i honestly brought my bike for the looks. it wasnt hard to get the hang of driving the 600. just be on super alert when u ride. and the only kawasaki i'd get is a ninja.
here's a quick turning tip. gently push the right handle bar down and away from u to turn right and vice versa for the left. it leans in the bike really smooth. then just throttle thru

I would learn how to ride on something other than a 600. Take a riding course, learn on a dirtbike, get a ninja 250 like skelly said above. They are super cheap, and cheap to insure. Also, make sure you have good health insurance...motorcycle insurance doesn't cover any injuries on you. I wouldn't go anything higher than a 600, and even that is pushing it IMO for someone who has never ridden before. But if you must, sit on a few and find what is comfortable for you. I wouldn't be trying to go fast or hit any backroads for a long time...and don't go cheap on gear. Get a good jacket, and a good helmet..ie Shoei/Arai.

That's the best advice given so far. I would absolutely not ride if i did'nt have health insurance. Believe it or not, there are a bunch of poeple out there without it. I don't have the best paying job in the world, but it does give me health and dental insurance.

Yeah, my roommate rides without it. He went down once, luckily it was a super low speed lowside...no real injuries.
