PDF is probably the most universal format you can use that wont lose information when transfering between platforms and programs. why anyone would NOT use it is beyond me.

:werd:

I used to use it al the time to send secured documents of files you don't want changed by another party. You can use it for all kinds of stuff....one of the single best programs ever written.

as long as adobe destroys every last trace of macromedia's UI's, i'm ALL for it. whoever designed their interfaces was an idiot. they really had no idea what they were doing, all the way up until the MX versions. adobe's interfaces are decades ahead of that crap.

they could do a couple things to make PDFs less of a pain. either open up the format and allow third party readers/writers, or slim down the PDF browser plugin so it operates quicker and smoother. as a format it's already pretty good as it is. its name describes it's purpose perfectly; a Portable Document. it's not meant to be a word processing format like microsoft word documents. and like you said, most other document formats still have a lot of issues going cross platform, language, browser, etc. you don't have any of these problems with PDFs.

Adobes trademark is slow opening

I use PS all day long and have just gotten in the habit of always leaving it open as long as the computer is still on. It sucks they can't up the speed on boot time but such is life.

Acrobat is a bit faster than PS is though and loading up ImageReady is painful at times.

illustrator is pretty slow, too. adobe programs tend to be pretty heavy, but they're packed full of features. i'm sure it's possible for them to speed up those load times - look at how fast OSX boots compared to OS 9 and under, or windows XP compared to 2000. pretty impressive. but it's probably not a big priority for applications on that scale. something like a web browser or an operating system *really need* it.

an example of one of the things that concerns me is how, with each release, adobe reader has gotten substantially worse. i haven't tried v7 yet.

what kinda specs does your computer have? at work, if i leave my photoshop open but minimized for a while, then go back to it later, the computer is pretty slow in bringing it back up. it's almost like waiting for it to start up again. this is probably a sideffect of small amounts of RAM, but i can't do anything about that at work. if they could find a way to slim down the running size of photoshop, that would be pretty cool. not necessary, but cool all the same

PDF's offer no security. That's like saying a mac is better for graphics. It's what the company wants you to believe, it's not what's true.

HTML has been around far longer and much more widely accepted. HTML would have been a much better alternative.
