as long as adobe destroys every last trace of macromedia's UI's, i'm ALL for it. whoever designed their interfaces was an idiot. they really had no idea what they were doing, all the way up until the MX versions. adobe's interfaces are decades ahead of that crap.
they could do a couple things to make PDFs less of a pain. either open up the format and allow third party readers/writers, or slim down the PDF browser plugin so it operates quicker and smoother. as a format it's already pretty good as it is. its name describes it's purpose perfectly; a Portable Document. it's not meant to be a word processing format like microsoft word documents. and like you said, most other document formats still have a lot of issues going cross platform, language, browser, etc. you don't have any of these problems with PDFs.
Adobes trademark is slow opening
I use PS all day long and have just gotten in the habit of always leaving it open as long as the computer is still on. It sucks they can't up the speed on boot time but such is life.
Acrobat is a bit faster than PS is though and loading up ImageReady is painful at times.
