I didn't mean that an ATI card won't work with an ASUS board (I'm running the same MB he is with a 9800 Pro) but someone else was suggesting that he go get the newest drivers from Nvidia which obviously won't work (it's not an NForce2 chipset).

I'm assuming the drivers loaded correctly and the device manager shows the ethernet adaptor to be working correctly.

Right click on my network places and go to properties. Inside there should be Local Area Connection icon and it should be enabled. If there is any icon for a network bridge, right click and remove it. Right click on the Local Area Connection icon and go to properties. Click on Internet Protocal (TCP/IP) and click properties (assuming it's there, if not, add it). Make sure it's set to obtain an IP address automatically and obtain DNS server address automatically (I'm assuming your ISP is similiar to mine and doesn't require a static address).

After all that's setup, close everything and click start, go to run and type cmd. Type "ipconfig /release" and then type "ipconfig /renew". This will force the computer to go out and find a new IP from your ISP and should get you up and running. I'd highly recommend you go pickup a router (I like D-link personally but most are good) so you'll be protected by it's built in NAT addressing and firewall. Even if you only have 1 computer, it's worth being behind something for protection as opposed to be connected right to the cable modem. Hopefully that will get you up and running.

OK, I tried that but I get this message:

"An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has time out."

 any ideas?

Yep, modem is on. I have been switching the cable from my modem back and forth from the old comp (that works) and the new system that doesn't want to cooperate.
