I need suggestions for ram memory, please. I wont be gaming much, I'll mostly be using this system for video encoding. I would like to overclock to as high as possible. I am also going to hook up a nice projector and audio system for a home entertainment setup later on.

I also already have a 15" lcd, keyboard/mouse, temporary speakers, and a WD 160gb/2mb cach eide HD for storage for this system. I'll go to compusa/bb/cc to listen to different audio systems before I lay any money down on speakers.

All help is welcome and appreciated

the dvd burner, for $20 more you could get the 2510 which is dual layer ready from the factory unless you plan on flashing your 2500a with the 2510 firmware to get dual layer from yours and save that $20.
and your motherboard, unless you're set on getting the 875 chipset or that particular board, you could save yourself like $70 and get the 865 version of that board (P4P800) which has PAT enabled making it just as fast as the 875.

Thanks for the reply.

I will flash the firmware for DL burning when I the DL media comes out, but that wont be for a while anyways. I just got done flashing my sony dw-u18a a few minutes ago with liteon 812s firmware, and flashing the DL firmware on to that. Although I'm new to building computers, I would consider myself a dvd burning expert

I think I'll switch to that p4p800 board instead. The only reason I opted for the p4pC is because these guys used it:http://anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.html?i=2021.:dunno:

Any suggestions for the ram?

DAMN YOU INTERNET! I just typed a huge ass post and it didn't post it!

I also recommend the 865PE chipset. I have ASUS's P4P800 Deluxe and I'm very happy with it. The only other big difference with the 875 is ECC memory but I've never had a problem without it.

I'm using Corsair XMS Low Latency sticks, 2 512M Twin X pack. They come with a set of heat spreaders. I think I paid a little over $250 for them. No complaints about it. They had some pretty aggressive CAS timing but I don't really understand all of that anyway. System runs fast and stable at stock clock speeds (when the damn internet doesn't crash!).

I might consider skipping the AIW card. I have a 9800 Pro and an ATI TV Wonder Pro (the TV side of an AIW without the graphics accellerator). I'm very disappointed with the TV wonder card. It was completely unstable till I got a hotfix from Microsoft to make it play nice with hyperthreading. Now it's still crashes about 25% of the time. I have an Audigy 2 ZS card and ATI's media center software cant mute the output for some reason (I have the newest Creative drivers and the newest version of media center, installed in that order) and when the program crashes after recording something, it will continue to play the TV instead of shutting down. I have to remember to mute my speakers before I leave or it sounds like there's a TV in here all th time. When it crashes like that, it also won't allow the screen saver/monitor powerdown to happen (I have a CRT so it doesn't really matter but it's annoying). I'm probably going to format and reinstall everything in a week or so and see if I can get it stable again but if not, I'm probably going to yank it out. I bought the cards seperate so if I ever upgrade my graphics card, I don't loose the TV tuning capability. I just wasn't happy with that TV tuner card and wouldn't recommend it.

Andy,

Would you suggest that I get 2x 256 or 1x 512 sticks, and what speed. I dont really need that much ram, because like I said, I'll be doing vid encoding with this machine, and I feel that 512 is sufficient for that. I dont know what speed of ram to get. Keep in mind that I'll be overclocking sooner or later.

PS- when I type a long post, i usually hit ctrl-A ctrl-C just to make sure. I even did it for this thread (thank goodness) cause submitting this thread didn't work the first time :happysad:

minimum ram speed i'd recommend is PC3200 (400mhz) because you've got a 800mhz FSB you've got to feed and 2 sticks since the board supports dual channel memory. if you have the money, get 2x512 sticks

Yeah yeah, everytime I copy my posts, it never crashes, it's only when I forget.

You want 2 sticks with that board. It's uses what's called Dual Channel DDR, I'm not sure of the specifics, but it has the ability to use 2 memory sticks more efficently than just 1 (you have to make sure you install it correctly, you want matching sticks in slots 1 and 3, it's all in the book with the MB). I'd assume it works similiar to the way RAID 0 does data striping, but I dont' know for sure. You want DDR400 (also called PC-3200) memory. That's the fastest memory you can offically buy. Some manufactures sell faster rated stuff (I've seen PC-4000) but it's not an offical standard. These memroy sticks are usually their best stuff and will the most stable for overclocking but are more expensive. I just used DDR400 with mine. You might consider going with the extra memory if your going to do video editing, you'll probably see some increase in performance. The less virutal memory you have to use, the faster you'll run.
