It's not uncommon for a JHP to pass through the assailiant, however it's not nearly as common with an FMJ.

Furthermore, if it does; as you stated it creates a "nasty hole of an exit wound" which is a lot more capable of stopping and inducing blood loss of the said aggressor, than an FMJ which would punch a 1/4" hole straight through. As I read oso neatly on a bullet test site, "We want to punch a hole in the hydraulics of the person, to induce blood loss and to stop blood flow to the brain so they can no longer pose a threat."

It's not so much because of their inability to penetrate walls and things of that nature that makes JHP's so nice, it's because of their ABILITY to rip apart flesh much larger than the size of the round itself.

Of course you want to transfer the most energy to the "bad guy," but you also don't want to shoot through the wall and hit the neighbor's little baby Billy. Do that, and you're in a world of shit. I live in a townhouse, so hitting the neighbors is just as big of a concern as shooting down the "bad guy."

It doesn't say much that I use 7.62x39 softpoint though, that's why I'm getting the 590. Twelve holes are better then one.

If you guys want bullet fragmentation, you should see what a 5.56 NATO (.223 Rem.) does from a 20" barrel. At around 2500fps or better, the bullet completely disintegrates into about 43 peices. It's somewhat hard to use a full length AR-15 for home defense though.

My home defense weapon is an SKS-M. Thirty rounds of cheap Russian loaded (but good ammo) soft point 7.62x39. That's until I can scrounge enough cash to buy a Mossberg 590.
where'd you get the -M ?

My favorite local shop had a customer pawn it on them. They didn't know what it was, it had a tacky aftermarket stock and a dinky five round mag, they where selling it for $185. I bought it along with two Kalashnikov '30 rounders, and snapped one of the thirtys in the -M. They where amazed, they didn't realize the -M took standard AK detachables.

Since then, I've fitted a Chinese red fibreglass "jungle" buttstock on it, left the Ramline handgaurd that came with it on, and swapped in an Albanian hook style bolt carrier. I like. I've even had a guy offer me an M1 carbine for it.

You said right away that you were kidding, but I want to go on record verifying that this is not a good home defence (you people spell funny) round.

It creates the most horrifying surface tissue damage, but does not penetrate sufficiently to actually stop someone who's intent on causing harm.

The round's reputation in the field is horrible.
