NT/XP have the same permissions policy structure. Someone using a system that has been not allowed to access a certian folder, will just get an "access denied" error message. I don't know if you can actually set it so they just simply can't see them.

That might be under Group Policies.

All in all, XP will still look the same to the people useing it.

SO in right clicking over the drive I get a list of potential properties changes.

In this list I have a permissions option to change the drive to Private...so does this mean if I turn C drive private and hidden that the OS will not boot or operate the programs on that drive? and can I set it up password based to individual drives so that when the person logs in it only allows the person to see the C drive with read on;y permission and their personal drive for writig to and storage while retaining my ability to go in and change as needed for maintenence?

I know this sounds stupid and is a lot of questions but I am tired of rebuilding comps right now and am trying to prevent allthis crap from happening again.

are you doing this yourself or finding out so someone else can do it? just wondering.

the way i would do it is to right click on a drive, click properties, and the go to security. (although this may not work on xp home...i'm not sure because i only have pro). there you can specify who has what permissions.

I am doing it myself...I do all my own and this is for XP corporate if that makes any difference (should have said that first I guess).

I noticed also that I can set file size allocations does this mean I can limit the size of file they can save or is it overall storage space they are allowed to use?

I don't mean to be asking all these n00b questions but my management of my computers has never had to go to these extremes.

i don't have xp in front of me, but...i do have 2k, and it's somewhat similar, so hopefully this will all make sense on xp.

really, you can set limits on just about everything. you can set quotas for users so they only have so much space to work with. you can specify permissions on each drive, directory, folder saying what they can and can't access.

i think the easiest thing to, if you're not overly worried about space and permissions is just to set permissions on each drive so certain users can write to theirs, set their "my documents" folder to point there, and have them always save files into the "my documents" folder.

i can go into more detail if you like (and you can hit me up on aim if you want). i took a 2 month class on just the permissions of win2k a while ago.

Are the other user accounts set up as admin's? If you set them as lower level user accounts, windows may deny them access to any critcal areas by default. They'll probably can't install software or make system changes either, but I dont' know how much access they actually need.
