i dunno i've been messing with my wireless here for a few days.. laptop picks it up fine new computer wont its really really pissing me off... here is the rule of thumb drumsy if the modem is close to the computer don't even eff with a wireless network if you aren't totally network savy. Just get a network card and slap it in there and plug in the cable..

i was confused as to how many comptures you have in the apartment.. if its more than 1 just get a router like the one he posted.... i will STRONGLY tell you not to try wireless unless you know someone. other than that its pretty straight foreward

i personally don't like d-link. every d-link product i've ever bought has been bad when i bought it, or crapped out very shortly after getting it.

My dad will be doing all of the networking and configuring. Have a father with 35 years as a Network Engineer for Unisys Corp was bound to come in handy someday!

Anyways, Let me see if I can show you how this would be.

The image below is an ok rendition of what my apartment looks like. The red dot is where the cable modem is, as well as my room-mate's computer. The other bedroom is mine. The red circles are where I could potentially put the computer. To minimize exposed cable, I am prepared to drill through some walls. Given the layout, what would be the best recommendation as a setup?

Probably not any that you will notice. Just make sure you put passwords on everything so the neighbors can't "steal" your bandwidth. Personally, I use hardwire. Most computers come with on-board NIC cards and if they don't you can buy one for $10 at Wal-Mart. Cable is about $0.29 at Radio Shack and you can buy pre-cut cable with ends for just a bit more. A friend of mine has wireless and has had a few problems with uninvited guests and connectivity issues. These come and go. As far as how to run the wire, you will have to use your imagination. I run ours under the wall molding by the floor. It's temporary and tasteful. Holes in sheetrock can be patched very easily if need be. From the drawing, it looks like you can go right through the closet wall.

It's totally up to you. I use hard wire and have NEVER had a problem. It's tried and true, but you have to run wires where wireless can be affected by so many variables, but it's more convenient.

Good luck.
