Default US intervention of Global Affairs

What do you think? I think we shouldnt act as "global police" but concentrate more on our country before acting on others. Discuss, thanks.

I do believe we need to do things at home first. But when it comes to security issues posed by other countries, then we have no choice but to act as police. Being the most powerful country, we are the one everyone dis-likes, because they're jealous...And dont like what we stand for...In a world without order there is only chaos, we help bring order where there is none, thus helping save ourselves from being affected by their chaos...

Don't think that we're the most powerful country. I have a friend that works with DOD and NSA as a computer network security consultant. Let's just say that their computer systems have actually been shut down WAAAAYYY too much already this year by foreign governments. You remember that blackout up in NYC? Supposedly that it was the result of a certain Asian government. The power companies were working with an Internet based way of checking power meters when they were hit. It was a virus. The virus that actually did that had 33 different styles of programming in it. One part of the code would execute and make way for the next bit of code. It was a brillant piece of work. If someone wanted to take down the USA, all that would be needed is an internet connection. Can you imagine if the US lost power like that again? You don't need to have a larger or technologically more advanced army to win a war. You just need to know how and what to hit.

Just my guess...but if a certain country caused the blackout last summer I think there would be a lot buz about it. This is the first time I am hearing about this rumor and I don't think it holds a lot of truth to it. But whatever.

To stay on topic the US has to intervene in global affairs. Why? Because we are the biggest global economy today. Just look at all the goods we use or consume everyday and look for their country of origin. The US keeps a lot of countries economies afloat with the amount of aid that is given, corporations that have relocated there, and the number of goods they produce for us. The US is the worlds largest consumer.

With that said I think we do have a right to be the world's policeman. I think the UN has proven itself ineffective at providing this service, and until they do someone needs to step in and keep order.

America as a nation is arguably the most powerful, but by no means should we play global police. Any country that believes in democracy, freedom, and justice for all should never make arbitrary decisions on a global scale, that can be saved for the world dictators of fiction. We need to have checks placed on our power to avoid becoming (more of) a world dictator and tyrant. America can (and perhaps will) conquer the world if gone unchecked, and I feel that giving one nation complete world power needs to be avoided at all costs or history books will one day talk about an allied force overthrowing a too power-hungry America.

Not if people don't want the public to know. Seriously ... you really think a single powerline in OH caused that? The more I'm hearing about this all, the more I start to see justification in the war with Iraq or other countries. We aren't discussing WMD either. The new battlefields aren't deserts, or jungles - it's also in cyberspace. I mean, he's my best friend, and I've seen his office. It's not like he's bullshitting me. A lot of stuff he can't tell me, what he does - it's really interesting and makes you think.

I think the US should be involved in the world around it, after all we all live on this rock, so it all makes sense for us to try to make it better. The problem I see with being the world's policeman, especially if we are the sole policeman, is that suddenly we impose what we think is right and what we think is just on other countries and cultures. It's like a cop being able to just pull you over randomly cause he didn't like the fact you drive a modified Honda, even if it is perfectly legal, just different. In that case though, you can challenge it in court, try to argue the law. But in the case of the global policeman, who's going to challenge them? The laws are whatever the global policeman wants them to be. The US needs to work with other countries, not alone.

Hmmmm...... another county causing the blackout? That's pretty funny, considering I live about 30 miles from WHERE IT STARTED! :slap: Anyway, the world needs a global police force. Because the world can't behave itself, and the only country with the capabilities and resources to be the mommy and daddy to all the delinquent children is the United States.
