We won't see any sort of speed limiting technology in this country in the current century. This country is run on money, and the revenue loss alone from no more speeding tickets would cause local governments to go bankrupt. Add to that the fact that something like this would get very few supporters if not for the fact that it severely cuts down on civil liberties.

I do not think we will ever have something that limits a cars speed to say 70mph for the reasons Chris said. Besides most cars already do have a governor on them...albeit a very high one.

What I could see being proposed is a method to shut a car off when involved in a high speed pursuit. Whether this device is installed in the car, or some sort of device that is hand held by the police, I am sure we are going to see this technology emerge if it already has not.

Quite a few trucking companies have 65 mph speed limiters installed on their new Freightliners, Kenworths, and Peterbuilts at the factory before they take delivery or the first mile is driven on them. But that is for different and more understandable reasons.

that's a good idea. So many times have I had cruise control on at 80mph and this semi right on my ass! If the speed limit is 70 and I'm already doing 10 over, perhaps you should slow down.

The big problem in the US is the high volume of old cars. Everything on the road right now would have to be refitted, and that just isn't happening.

Companies like Haltech would be worth millions overnight, too, as people run out to get aftermarket EMS's to eliminate all the stock computer BS.

Don't forget, Japanese market cars have had 112mph limiters for years. Some are easier to defeat then others, though.

Most cars currently have some sort of speed limiter for saftey reasons, it kicks in when the car approaches speeds which challenge the limit of the cars handling characteristics.

In some Vans, SUV's, etc... it can be found as low as 100-110 mph. I wish I knew of a specific example. However, one must also consider the fact that the "average" car produced these days is much more powerful and safer than the same a few years ago. The Honda accord and Nissan maxima are great examples.

As far as dropping the speed limiter to 70 or 75 MPH, I just firmly believe that's a stupid idea. Say your wife's about to deliver your new baby RIGHT NOW. I dont care what people say, I'm getting her to the hospital RIGHT NOW... even if I have to do 100 on the interstate. I'll pull over for him at the ER entrance.

This is of course, and extreme case.

I understand what you are saying. 2 Years ago my sister was held hostage at her college and I was on the highway when I found out. I think I averaged 110MPH on my way there and could have cared less, and much less stopped had a cop seen me.
