Drew. I was looking at that proc vs an i5 2500K Sandy Bridge. Thoughts? Seems to be a rock solid choice, but, at the price of the one you listed.. why not?

I'm probably just going to end up building one. It's been a few years but seems to be my best bet. I'll post up my configuration once I'm done toying around.

I have a SSD in my current computer. I would get a 120gb one to put your operating system and some programs on...then just get a regular HD for storage. My computer boots up from completely off to fully started and ready to use in about 20 seconds. SSD's are great

Call me a pessimist, but I can't see you building a desktop that is significantly better than your laptop for the money you're willing to spend.

Deal hunting and buying parts over a duration of time, yes.

Need something by end of week, no.

I made a beast of a system for the same price.
- Asus mITX board (wireless n, latest / greatest stuff) = $80
- Antec mITX case (w. power supply) = $30
- Intel Core i7 3770k (w. fan and heatsink) = $200
- Slim dvd+rw drive = $20
- 16gb DDR3 ram = $100
- 120gb OCZ SSD = $80
- Motorola Bluetooth keyboard / mouse = $20

Monitor = reused

I'd encourage this, if he was going to use it. But for browsing facebook and reddit, I'd personally just use the laptop and use the money on something fun or pay off debt.

My fiance's aunt bought a 12 core apple pro to use for spreadsheets and checking mail. I want to rob her blind.

If you're going to use the integrated graphics, the i7's graphic output is much better.

Dang.

I have a quad core desktop from 5 years ago I never replaced. I use it every day. My tasks include:
- heavy sound editing
- light video editing
- some gaming (Minecraft, upcoming Simcity)
- lots of downloading
- Microsoft Office w. heavy Visio and Project use

With that 12 core machine ... I don't know what you'd ever need to upgrade for. Maybe editing full movies rendered in 7.1 THX and beyond 1080p?

Awesome. Definitely was the plan.

I may be willing to spend a little more, especially piece by piece. I was looking for a "right now" type of thing, but the more I looked into building one again, the more I think I'd be happier with it.

Nice. I do have some parts I can reused. Wish I had kept the case from my previous build.

I hate using this thing for any type of work o: Nice to have to take to work or chill out in the living room though.

Okay, thanks. For the price difference, might as well. Hopefully ordering tomorrow.
