I have a quad core desktop from 5 years ago I never replaced. I use it every day. My tasks include:
- heavy sound editing
- light video editing
- some gaming (Minecraft, upcoming Simcity)
- lots of downloading
- Microsoft Office w. heavy Visio and Project use
With that 12 core machine ... I don't know what you'd ever need to upgrade for. Maybe editing full movies rendered in 7.1 THX and beyond 1080p?
