Default 4th gen vs. 5th gen, whose faster

I believe a 4th gen jdm vtec swap (or usdm even) will take a 5th gen anyday of the week. Some seem to disagree on this, but what do you guys think.

4th gen is lighter
jdm motor has same hp as 5th gens, and better ecu program
4th gen is obd1 so more options to get crazy

i think the 5th generation type SH could take a 4th generation, but if we are talking stock lude's, then i dont know.

Havoc, you're too consumed with customizing, JDM bull crap, and aftermarket add-ons to make your case either way. Now, if you talk strictly stock vs. stock, off the showroom floor, the fifth generation Prelude is a bit faster to sixty and in the quarter than the fourth gen. VTEC model. That is the only way to compare the two, anyway. You have to be consistant when comparing cars, catch my drift? The way you talk, hell, you can make a Civic DX faster than a stock Acura NSX with the right equipment. Not a fair comparison, now is it?

I disagree with you, fastball. The 4thGen VTEC of any year 93-96 will eat a 5thGen alive stock for stock. 5thGen's run what, 15.4 or so stock in the quarter? 4thGen VTECs are run 15.0-15.1 stock in the quarter. The 4G VTECs have shorter gearing. That is what makes them quicker, even though they are just slightly lighter.

Official stats from this link:

http://www.car-videos.com/performanc...ID1=260&ID2=72

1996 Honda Prelude VTEC ------------- 1997 Prelude Type-SH

0-60: -- 6.75 seconds ------------------ 6.70 seconds

1/4 mile: -- 15.43 ------------------------ 15.30

Top Speed: -- 139 mph ----------------- 139 mph

There's not a huge difference, and I never said ther was. For all intents and purposes the cars have about equal acceleration. The fourth gen is not, however, faster than the fifth gen. I'm not trying to rub it in, I would just appreciate people do their homework before just saying something they think is right.

Not taking offense, but I DO know my stuff when it comes to my car and I'm not exactly how valid that site is but here is a copy of a Car and Driver page that shows the quarter of a Car and Driver Article

I've never seen a 5thGen touch that stock anywhere. And if you want to use websites, go to http://www.car-stats.com/ and look up the preludes.

Just went to car-stats, and I got 7.2 for the 0-60 on the 1993 VTEC, and 6.8 on the 2000. The 1/4 mile was 15.1 on the '93 and 15.4 on the '00, so there will be a slight...... very slight variance based on who tests it, and all the other variables (weather, road conditions, etc.) What I'm saying, is that the cars are essentially equal in acceleration. Performance handling is no comparison, but acceleration is even. When I said the 5th gen was faster, I said a bit . I never made it sound like a fifth gen could trounce a 4th gen, but you guys seem to think other wise. So, if you were to give an edge to either car it would have to be the fifth gen. It's negligable, though. But certainly not a glaring edge to fourth gens.

Let's be honest..... they have the same acceleration. There. Plain and simple.

Comes down to the driver.

But I'm arguing the other way. The "slight" edge would go to the 4G VTEC because of it's shorter gearing and the small difference and weight. They both have the same power virtually (190HP on 4G and 195 on 5G) but gearing would make the 4G quicker. What is your argument for the 5G being faster? I've always seen actually timeslips posted by people on preludeonline and I see 4G VTECs getting 15.0-15.1 while 5Gs getting 15.4 being the quickest stock.

Again, I have not taken any offense and I hope you haven't. Just friendly "debate".

No offense here, I'm just going by the stats I've seen. And it seems that it's about even, with the fifth gens a little faster in both catagories on some tests, in only 0-60 in others. There's hardly enough of a difference to say that the 4th gen is faster. If you and I raced 5 times in the quarter, I bet we would each win two and tie the fifth. But the fifth gen does have a little more than slight edge on 0-60.

BTW, 1999-2001 had 200 hp on the five speeds, 195 for the sport shifts. Just an FYI.
