according to the 1993 VTEC Si Helms and the 1997 Prelude helms, they have the same gear ratios 1 thru 5, and final drive.

i dont see the 4th having shorter gearing.

the 5th gen Base gives up less than 100 lbs to the 4th gen VTEC. thus weight is not a concern.

the 4th gen makes 185hp. the 5th gen 97-98 is 195hp. the 5th gen 99-2001 is 200hp... these are all considering 5sp trannies.

yes, OBD I is a big factor, but when it comes down to it, the power output to weight ratio is almost identical on both cars. it's purely a driver's race, stock to stock.

I would have to say 4th gen. they have 190 btw not 185. and honestly I think its all in marketing. what changed to give another 5hp, and then another 5 in 99+. its already been proven that the header was in fact the same. anyway the only place I have seen a 4g vtec slower in the 1/4 mile was from fastball's link. which compared both obdII cars. so basically what Im saying is the 93-95 is quicker then 97+.

You guys are too much...

First off...Preludes (both gens) are heavy. Heavy enough so that its not a major player in the import "go fast" scene. Obviously the Civics have that sewn up.

Secondly...They are both 15 second cars!!! (stock) whats the big deal?

Finally...Jeezz...you make it seem that a 1/2 second here and there is a huge difference!! Its NOTHING!!!! shit...race with an almost empty tank and that half second is gone...

If you were really concerned with performance, 0-60 times, and 1/4 miles times, YOU WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED A PRELUDE!!!

I have a 2000 Prelude. I love it. I dont mean to talk shit about the Prelude. I love em..But speed is not the main reason you purchased your car. If that was the case...you would have purchased a torque filled V8.

Bottom Line.. The 4th gen and 5th gen are the same. Mods and the driver are going to make the difference. Stop talking about stupid shit. One person said that the 4gen "eats the 5th gen alive" and yet beats it by .5 second?

Yeah the cars are very similar and off by tenths of a second with the same driver behind the wheel. I would just have to say they're the same speed.
I researched these two generations for a while and the 4th gen VTEC models are the same speed really with the 5th gens.
Late.

First lets keep it civil so I dont have to shut the thread down.

I'll throw some thing in here that haven't been talked about yet. First not all 4thGen VTEC's are OBD-I, I believe they switched to OBD-II for 95-96. Quater mile times mean NOTHING, each car, each track, and each driver will yeild different times. I've peronsally ran a 15.2 bone stock in my '99 SH. I've seen a few (and more then one) 5th gens hit 14.9-14.8 stock. However I'm sure a stock 4th Gen with similar driver and track would be very close. Now that weight issue everyone talks about is a little off as well, I remember when hondaprelude.com was around there was a 5th Gen owner would weighed his car at the track at it came in under 2900 lbs with a 1/2 tank of gas.

They are so close you can't say, and anyone that thinks it's hands down one way or the other has a lot to learn.

notice we had a 5th gen ownder arguing 5th, and a 4th owner arguing 4th....
The main lesson learned is to keep personal prejudice out of debates, and I don't think either one of you were doing that... just my .02

Ah, yes.... but I also disclaimed myself every time, noting it's too close to say hands down either way. He made it out like 4th gens would eat a fifth gen for dinner. I just had to cool his jets, and now it's all this.

hehe
hang on a second here pal
wat in gods name are u talkin bout
i have never lost to a civic...si or not

civic si does not have the go fast scene sewn up by far
and the good news is i have plenty of footage to prove it
a decently modded (i/h/e) 2000 civic si is lookin at 15.2 best 1/4 mile time

if you are losing to civics that often than you clearly...
a. - cant launch/race your lude (hey they can be picky)
b. - proved the 5th gen is slower than the 4th gen

"Bottom Line.." 4th gen beats the 5th gen (maybe not the SH), but still i have beatin SH lude.
and you can throw the argument that its all driver skill, but either way it makes me look good.

Default You guys got probs.

You know what, I just did this post cuz someone on the site kept trying to tell me that a 5th gen would eat my 4th gen, and I totally disagree, cuz i have raced a few and got them all.

On the stats, stats are crap, no stats are ever the same unless they copied them, it really depends on the driving.

Some of you guys are getting a little anal on a non important topic.

As for the guy who was saying preludes are so slow and this and that, most preludes on the street will beat most civics and integras on the street. Full race cars are a different story. Plus being a nineteen year old in college and affording a Prelude that runs 14s is damn fine with me.

Thats all I have to say bout that., and also 5th gen baselines are faster than sh.
