1997 Honda Prelude Engine
Hey, I think i acidentally switched from 5th gear to 2nd gear while goin around 70mph, then all of a sudden i hear a lound *clunk* and the rpm just shot up past the red line. Now whenever it revs up to when vtec kicks in, it doesn't kick it, insted it makes a different louder noise. Is the engine broken and i need a new engine or is it *fixable*?
it drives normal on the low rpm's so i think it's just the second cam that is broken. just hope the teeth on the cams are not broken and the hole is so there won't be any little specks of teeth in the engine. Since dohc vtec has 2 cams, the first is ok, just the second is damaged i think.
well I know for a fact that when the check engine light is on, and there is something that the computer "sees" as wrong, VTEC is affected.
It would drive normal..and then after 5000rpm, you would hear the other cams take over, but you wouldnt feel any power increase. As soon as the problem is resolved...you power is back....
I would tell the dealer exactly what you may have done, and let them look at the trouble codes...or anything else they might find.

Sounds like valve springs and bushings are bent. You may actually be very lucky, because instead of a whole new engine you may only need the head rebuilt. Second gear at 70 mph usually means valve float, piston damage, and if anything, overheating. You may want to have an oil and water pressure check now, too. As well as compression check. At that RPM you never know what seals or rings you may have burned.
