vtec not kickin in!
my 2000 prelude non-SH is not hitting vtec! i checked the oil, but there was nothing wrong with it. i brought it to HONDA but they said no code came up for the engine and that vtec was working fine. can anyone tell me if they know of another problem that would cause vtec to stop working?

What indications do you have that it's not working right? When did it start not working right? Is it dramatic or slowly disappearing?
I'm no VTEC expert but I'm sure that someone that knows more about it will wanna know a bit more detail. Any more info you can give would help out

Check your v-tec solenoid. It is right behined the left rear corner of you valve cover. The solenoid is what makes v-tec work. Also see if the temp guage is working, if the temp sending unit has gone bad the car will think it is cold, v-tec will not open and the car will rev limit around 6,500 rpm.

when doesnt it work??? if the engin is not at normal opperating temp the ecu will not allow the v-tec kick in. make sure the car is warm before you punch the gas pedal.

definitely make sure the car is warm, also, is your speedometer working? cause sometimes people speedometers or VSS doesnt work so the ECU wont engage vtec if yur not going at least like 10mph or something

yes you will get a check engine light when your VTEC doesn't work.... check your VTEC soleniod and maybe you just have a weak VTEC.. my friend has a 94 accord ex with the 2.2L SOHC VTEC and i can't even notice VTEC in his car, it doesn't feel like it kicks in... but it does.

well I know what youre talking about with a "weak" vtec, a lot of ther SOHC vtecs are a lot more mild and you do not feel the gains in a lot of them. But he has a 5th gen lude, which you should definitely be able to feel/hear it, by the way, ludeman, do you have an intake or anything else that would enable you to hear vtec? like drift said, if the ecu knows that the solenoid is not operating it will throw a vtec malfunction code....

SOHC VTEC as VTEC lobe engagement only on the intake valves, hence the difference in sound and performance compared to DHC VTEC, which actuates both the intake and exhaust valves.
