Wow. Never heard of VTEC problems before in my life. I know Honda has never had any recalls on the system in it's 12+ years of existance. As others have said, it won't engage untill engine is at full running temp.

crucial, Im not knocking on the SOHC's, I was just saying that if his was SOHC then he may not be able to notice it, but since it was DOHC vtec he should definitely notice it engaging, there is nothing wrong with the SOHC's

The most common cause of VTEC not engaging is that the engine cannot produce proper OIL PRESSURE to engage VTEC. Why hasn't anyone told this kid to check his oil yet?

Well hot damn dude... sorry I missed that. Why couldn't the dealer figure out what was wrong with it?

People haven't because he said it's a 2000 Honda, and only the older VTECs relied on oil pressure to activate VTEC, now it is all electronic. The first VTECs did rely on oil pressure to activate, so if the oil level wasn't high enough, VTEC couldn't kick in... reiterating, that is no more, VTEC is now electronic, I can't remember what year that all changed, but for sure a 2000 model doesn't rely on oil pressure to activate VTEC.

....my bad, I should do my research before spouting nonsense. Only the new i-VTEC relies on electronic VTEC engagement, and it still checks oil pressure before engaging. Everything before the i-VTEC runs off of oil pressure primarily, so IHI was correct in assuming oil to be the problem, although someone had already asked that question. Sorry about that.
