5th Gen Transmision Options HELP PLEASE
hi there guys.. my transmission on my 99 (base) just died w/ 105k miles. My insurance would cover the new one and most of the labor.
My mechanic sugested to get racing gears and rebuilt it (it would cost the same as buying the spec one for the car, the transmission for the 5th gen run around 3200)
However I was trying to save some money ( i could get about 1 thousand) and do some other upgrades in my car by buying a used or an accord transmission.
So, that said, what can I possibly fit in that car? any other h22 tranny? What about the accord transmissions or any F series? Would any of these bolt on my car? Please help me w/ this one guys!

IF this is a truly overhauled by either Honda or Howard you WILL pay that much installed. This price is fairly common at dealerships who do offer a warranty on the box and labor.
As to "racing gears" there is basically no such thing for the 5th gen tranny. You can install an LSD and Final drive that will improve things for either road course or drag.

See.. my insurance company would pay that much based on the costs at the dealership.. That's why I would get that type of money! However I plan on using 1/2 of that on transmission and using the rest on some other upgrades on my grades
Doe anybody have suggestions on where to rebuild it or to buy racing gears/lsd? does any other h22 tranny fits there?

You could save some money and use an F22 tranny, but I recommend sticking with an H22 trans because with it you'll be able to stay in VTEC when accelerating. You would get a little better MPG with the F22 trans, but thats not worth the decreased performance IMO. If you were to have rebuilt, I'd look into getting an LSD. Another option would be purchasing a JDM m2b4 tranny, it came with LSD stock.

Unless you were swaping out the automatic for a manual, wouldn't you have to rebuild the current transmission in your car due to the computer controls for the sportshift? Correct me if I'm wrong, but due to the fact that the automatic trans in any 5th gen Prelude is specifically designed just for that car, you can't just swap it with some other Honda auto trans, even from an Accord.
the m2b4 is nice, but my dream tranny is an m2f4 (4th gen) 5 speed with a kaaz and a houseman 4.7 FD. btw, you could buy/build one of these dream trannies for about $2000, which goes to show you how much extra money you're getting from insurance.
the typical used 5th gen 5 speed goes for about $500-700 bucks on h-t. however, any h or f transmission (cept the f20c for obvious reasons) will bolt up and work with the h22. but, the gear ratios on the F and h23 trannies suck.
the m2b4 should be floating around for about $1000. It's a good tranny, esp for those who want a simpler and cheaper (yet effective) LSD solution.
(just in case, if you've got an auto and are switching to manual, it'll be some more work.)
