Theorys on Preludes Demise
Why do you guys think the prelude did not sell well? My thoughts areToo high prices, body style, bad sales from 4th gen carried to 5th gen? Any other thoughts, think they will bring it back?
What I've heard pretty much seems to point to the fact that Honda was carrying too many 2 door sport coupes. With the market spread thin over 3 models (Civic, Accord, and Prelude) Honda couldn't afford to support them all, and one had to give, obviously the Prelude. I've heard a lot about the bad marketing of the 4th gen having something to do with it. Also, the Prelude is the only one of the three that doesn't come in a 4-door version, so maybe versitility of the model?
Either way, I don't understand at all how anyone could say that the body style had anything to do with it, I think it's one of the BEST looking cars on the road.

I heard it was too expensive for the market especially when , at the time the 5th gen was out everyone was SUV crazy. The Prelude had a market leading 200 HP, rated best handling car under $30k and 4th best handling car period.
I still hold out hope that the name Prelude will be on a car again

I meant the 4th gen styling was not recieved well. I think thats why Honda re-made the 3rd gen into the 5th gen and did not take any styling ques from the 4th over to the 5th gen. I think the 5th gens body style kicks ass.

The decision to can the Lude came down before, well before the S2000 went on sale. I still think the closet car HOnda has to the Prelude is the S2000 and even that isn't that close.
That Accord isn't it, the V6 coupe might be fast but it feels very bloated and the suspension feels luxury not sporty.

The 5th gen prelude is still one of the most solid cars I see on road. I feel that the g35 from Nissan carries some of its "feel" but that might just be me.
I think the price has a lot to do with it. And at the time people aren't used to 25k+ sports coupes from Japan. Now we have 350z, wrx, sti, evo, etc, and bunch of other 30k+ imports. But I guess prelude was too early for its time in the USA and before the trend sets in it was discountinued.
Now if Honda is to sell it again, make it AWD (torque steer is a problem with the FWD), 240hp and it will burn 350z, Sti, and Evo like a hot peeled potato on tissue paper!

I highly doubt Honda would ever do that, an AWD drivetrain would be extremely expensive compared to the FWD that most of their lineup besides the s2000 and NSX in North Ameria uses, I just cant see Honda switching to an AWD system on it, its just wayy too expensive for a product that isnt a sure seller, like a civic(which is now even struggling to keep up with their other products.)
