Celica is dead

What always dissappointed me about the Celica was it was underpowered untill 1999, then they just made it ugly (IMO). The 1996-1998 generation was very sharp, and I really liked it. But the top engine available was the 140 hp Camry engine. Hardly what you would want for that car. Then when the total redesign happed, they added the right engine and trans combination, but the car just got too "wedgy". I'd take a 1998 GT model with the drivetrain from a 2003 GT-S in a heartbeat!
A new Celica would probably address most, if not all, of those concerns. In the Scion thread the Toyota/Scion rep stated that the tC would target a different buyer and would be a different car than the Celica. Thats good enough indication for me that they're not toally killing off the Celica. And from what I heard about Scion and the tC is that Scion will be a US brand only for now. Some of its cars will come from existing JDM Toyota models, but some (like the tC) will be all-new and unique, although they may be based off exisiting platforms. If this is true, then the Celica would still have a role in Toyota's line-up elsewhere in the world and would likely come to the US along with the tC.
like mike said the celica was good enough to give the integra some challenge, but with the introduction of the next gen integ/rsx it fell behind.
and i hate to be stereotypical, but all the people i know that bought them are either 1)girls
2)guys who wanted a fast looking car, but didn't hold up
i liked the previous gen celica with the quad headlights, but motor was suxor on that
ohhh well, another move my toyota that seems as though they are going in a different direction then from before

From the standpoint of form development, I actually like the exterior design of this Celica much more than the preceding generation.
h: The illegible gauges & cheapo interior (IMO) kill it for me.
I doubt the Celica is going to be euthanized. It has sufficient brand equity to warrant continued development.

Sadly yes... they are chasing the baby-boomer generation in terms of marketing strategy and chassis designs (ES330/ Camry/ Solara, Avalon, Corolla, I'd argue Echo as well). This will not suit them well when this market sector begins to die off. :a:And don't get me started on the Lexus lineup, drinking Premium like it's Evian, leaving real enthusiasts with only 91 RON peewater.

The baby-boomer generation are the people that have the most money right now. So it makes perfect business sense to market toward them. It will be awhile before the baby-boomer dies off. I would say at least another 30 years. By then, who knows what will happen. Unlike Buick, I think Toyota can still create exciting car if they wanted to. I mean, only recently did they kill off the Supra in Japan. I'm sure they're working on the replacement as we speak. They also have plenty of experience w/ many racing series like JGTC to take some design idea into production. I think once the gen x and y gets older and have more money, they'll begin to make cars that will appeal to us. In the mean time, there's no point for them to change if they're making so much money off the baby-boomer.
