Default Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution RS

Mitsubish is bringing out a stripped down version of the EVO presumably for motorsports use, kind of like the JDM Impreza WRX STi Type-C (or the JDM EVO RS).

It weighs 146 lbs less than the regular EVO and replaces the open front diff with a helical limited-slip. Items removed are the wing; HID lights (replaced with halogens); rear wiper; air conditioning; ABS; power motors for the windows, doors, locks and side mirrors; the entire audio system; trim in the trunk; vanity mirrors; rear assist grips; map lights; lots of sound-deadening material and even that little piece of leather wrapping that goes around the parking brake lever. It's going to be priced at "under $27k." The only external clues that it's an RS are the lack of the wing and unpainted black plastic door handles and side mirrors.

Sounds really good to me. If you want a car for pure performance and you take it to the track, then this is a step up to an already fast EVO. It's probably not good if you only use it for the street though. Cheaper faster car from the factory, now that's a nice option.

I'd take a regular EVO personally.

This is being brought over in limited quantities mainly as a platform to build rally cars from since race teams rip out a lot of the stuff that mitsu has gone and ripped out.

I read about it. But didn't feel like posting it. Kind of disappointed. I thought they could shave more weight than that.

i really don't think they can shave more weight from the car as it is pretty light for an awd turbo'd car with a sophisticated suspension for ~$30k

probably the only way to shave more weight besides a total gutting of more components would be to use lighter yet more expensive materials like carbon fiber or aluminum which would raise the cost of making the car

they already have several larger panel in Al. like the hood and I believe the roof? I might be wrong on the roof.

but atleast they added a lsd in the front.

It's pretty good, I guess I was just expecting more. :dunno:

A C&D article talked about the Evo RS, but they said that the weight loss made only a negligible difference. Who knows. But at $26k, its an overpriced SRT-4...

i completely disagree...the EVO is not a pieced together rice rocket competitor...it is the real thing: a sports sedan...awd and an engine that was specifically designed for high boost application...the srt-4 is no such animal but rather dodge's attempt to instill excitement into its brand at an affordable price (245lb ft tq through fwd = god awful torque steer)...the srt-4 is more of an economy car with a big turbo slapped onto it

Dammit I knew the SRT-4 comparison was inevitable.

The SRT-4 is fwd. The EVO is awd. The fact that they are both high powered turbocharged cars based on econoboxes is a similarity, not their defining characteristic. End of story.

So sayeth the man with the Protege5 with a turbo slapped onto it. :fawk:

The SRT-4 doesn't torque steer so bad, plus a Quaife diff was added for the '04 model year and that helps even more.

Oh and I'm sure it's common knowledge that the '03 put about 220-225 hp to the wheels and the '04 puts down about 245.
