Default Timing Belt

How much should I expect to pay for a timing belt job from the dealer? Private Mechanic? At what millage should I do it at? If I was to buy the parts myself what parts do I need?

Actually timing is every 70,000 miles. Hard to find a site with directions. Go to the bookstore and get the haynes or something like it.

There are some other things that you should also replace while doing the timing belt like the water pump and any other things that can't be reach easily. I have a pdf version of the helms manual and could send you a copy of the timing belt section when I get home and find it. It's not to hard just a lot of steps and precautions when doing this but it's all in the manual. I will send that to you tonight. The timing belt is done as part of the 90k mile maintanence.

it's not bad but is very "crucial", you and have to be carefull since your dealing with the life line of the engine, and could possibly do alot of damage if done incorectly, also pull a search, there are a lot of threads about it, one tid bit though, the crank bolt is a doosey! will need masive air wrench or crank tool, took mine off with a 3/4" air wrench,

You'll need a new belt (duh), new water pump, and a new tensioner.

All three together should run a little more than $200.

Then, go buy the Moroso crank pulley tool. It is, honestly, the best $60 I have ever spent on my car. With the tool, pulling crank bolts out can be easily accomplished with a 1/2 NAPA bar and a normal socket. Heck, I even used the 12 pt socket from my Craftsman set.

Word of warning: Be super super gentle with the water pump bolts. They only need 8.7lb/ft of force. That's just a hair above finger tight. You could probably torque them to spec with just your pinky finger on the wrench.

My wife's Accord is overdue for hers 110,000+ miles. Local Honda dealer quoted $599 +tax...I am grabbing my ankles as we speak. But she has a lot of little things wrong that I am going to have done at the same time so...ouchh:

Default One thing to consider

DIY timing belt changes are great... unless you don't have any of the proper tools to begin with, and if you can't borrow them. Keep in mind that a good torque wrench, crank pulley tool, sockets and breaker bar are the minimum - that'll set you back almost $150.

A good, independent mechanic should be able to do it for ~$200 labor + $200 in parts (belt, wp, tensioner). Unless you have a newer car under Acura warranty, avoid using dealers for service. As many owners can attest to, you are not guaranteed the best service, and they are significantly more expensive. Just my 2c.
