Default Did I just f up my engine?

Hi, picked up a used 95 GSR a couple of weeks ago, so I was curious to see how it would fare on the track. After doing all the basic preventative maintenance (oil, fluids, belts) I headed out to the track last weekend.

First run, everything's cool, but I bog and wind up with a 15.8

Next run, I'm determined to do better. I launch nice, and suddenly the clutch slips. BAMM! I hit rev limiter at ~8200. Holy shizit! So I clutch and shift into second. The car pulls, then the damn clutch slips again. BAAAAAMM! Rev limiter AGAIN at 8200 rpms! I nurse it into third and mosey down the track at 80mph (don't ask about my time on that one!)

I decide that's it for me and cruise back home. On the way, I'm agonizing over what I've done to the car. So far, no messed up noise, no apparent loss in power according to butt dyno, and no smoking or oil burning. What do y'all think? Did I do irreparable damage to my new baby? What's likelihood of valve float on a 81000 mile B18C? And how can I check to see if I f'd up anything... compression test? I still can't believe it, oh the pain...

assuming that it's still the original clutch, it's probably just worn down and will need replacing soon. however 81k seems a bit soon for a clutch to wear out. it all depends on how the previous owner drove it.

i wouldn't worry about floating a valve since you caught the rev limiter on the way up (in other words, it wasn't a misshift). if it's idling just as before, assume that it's ok. if you really want to put your mind at ease, you can do a compression check or leak down test to be sure. however, not to freak you out, this may uncover problems that you've had before, so if things don't check out, it doesn't necessarily mean it was due to the run at the track.

what i would do is check to see if it is the clutch that's slipping (and due for a replacement). there are a few ways to check this, though i'm not versed on all of the methods. i've heard that one way to check is to punch the gas while cruising in fifth. if revs climb with no apparent increase in speed, your clutch is probably slipping.

anyone else want to chime in with some methods for clutch wear check?

You can also check by going up steep inclines and if the rpm's go up and no acceleration then it's slipping.

Thanks guys.

So far, no off idle, no smoking, and not much to indicate damage. I'll keep all digits crossed. Gotta say, hitting that limiter is like running into a wall. Pretty disconcerting.

I live on a steep hill, and the rpms blipped up about 2000 rpms when I shifted to 4th going about 30mph. Time for a new clutch.... probably an ACT with a full face. Damn, here I thought I got a pretty good deal on the car. :stupid:

gsr's cut off @ 8200 rpm anyways im sure the clutch and flywheel can handle that abuse considering it was designed for perfomance

The engineers programmed in that rev limiter because they know where the engines break. I wouldn't worry too much at all about the safety of your engine as long as it wasn't a mis-shift, and since it wasn't, you should be fine.

that's why you have a rev limiter. to keep you from overrevving and breaking your nice gsr engine into itty bitty gsr-pieces. of course, it can't help much if you drop to second gear at 85mph by accident. but if that happened, as you release the clutch you should notice the huge drag all of a sudden as the engine catches and push the clutch back to the floor asap before it overrevs. rev limiter can't battle mechanical force

:werd:

Engine seems fine since then. Clutch is slipping, though. Next on list: Spoon or ACT clutch setup. heh heh
