Default Temp gauge going way high, HELP!!

After driving for 15-25 mins, if I come to a stop the temp gauge on the dash goes to the max. Once I start driving again goes to normal. Cars not over heating, and I dont hear a fan coming on. Whats wrong? My fan, my switch to kick the fan in, something else? Thanks for the help!!!

First make sure that you have the right amount of anti-freeze in the system, then make sure there is no air in the system. If none of that works then I would suspect the thermastat. I had a similar problem but mine was the radiator cap but I was loosing fluid though. I hope this helps

I will check that out, If I was low on A/F wont the car continue to stay hot even while driving (cold air being rushing into the engine bay)?

When I was gettin low it would only get really hot when I would stop driving it would drop back down again but not all the way to normal temps it has something to do with the water pump being able to pull more water through while driving.

your coolant level is most likely low. happened to me alot with my old gs-r. found out that the seal on my radiator cap was deteriorating, so i replaced that, topped off the coolant, and problem solved.

DUDE! You might be right, I did smell coolant just before I saw the temp gauge.

I go check it

if its not the cap, its probaly gunna be the thermastat.
i had to replace mine recently, allthough with my luck, the radiator cracked a couple weeks later.

i had the same problem. So i went to the shop, got a new radiator. Still had the same prob. Got a thermastat, same prob. Changed the fan senser, same prob. Then we looked into the resivoir, an we say the nasty, grusome combination of motor oil, & antifreeze which had equaled to - Headgasket. It Suck pure ass. :booty: so while they where replacing the gasket, i had to get rings and all that gay crap. So i hope u dont end up the same way that i did. Good Lock, and get it cheked FAST.:exnbp:

Since we're on the temp gauge subject,

in my previous car, the needle would point to 12:00
in my gsr, the needle points to 11:00

can any other gsr's confirm this?

hmm.. check the fuses to your fan.. you said you didn't hear it come on.. that could be why it gets hot when you're at a standstill, but fine when moving.

i'd assume if you were low on antifreeze, even moving wouldn't cool. if you're thermostat was stuck open, and the fans were working, your engine wouldn't overheat, it probably just wouldn't get to operating temp.

if your thermostat were stuck closed (which is very unlikely), it wouldn't cool while moving either.

like i said, i'd check fans first.
