your coolant level is most likely low. happened to me alot with my old gs-r. found out that the seal on my radiator cap was deteriorating, so i replaced that, topped off the coolant, and problem solved.
DUDE! You might be right, I did smell coolant just before I saw the temp gauge.
I go check it
