Default burning oil

Hello, I am pretty sure that my 96 integra is burning oil. It does not leak but 2000 miles after oil change there is no much oil. Any ideas how can I fix this. Thanks

Valve seals are probably worn or your piston rings are worn. Not really much you could do unless swap or rebuild. Just keep an eye on your oil level for the time being.

I'm in the same boat, buddy. my cars got 134k on the clock and after letting a friend take it for an autocross fun run i saw exactly how much she's puffing smoke. are there any simple ways to distinguish bad valve seals from rings on thier way out? I compression tested it about a year ago (maybe 6k miles) and everything was good across the board, so it makes me think that the rings should be fine, but the car has been through 4 track days and nearly a full season of autocross since then... so my abuse might have alot to do with it. I've also heard that these motors have the tendency to deposit shit in the cylinder walls which can sorta "fill the gaps" of bad rings and allow the cylinder to keep decent compression even with the ring seals damaged... any input?

Have a shop perform a compression & leakdown test. Thats the only way to tell for sure. Some get off lucky with replacing the PCV valve, but its unlikely thats your problem.

You can get a compression tester for $40 or so, but the leakdown tester is fairly expensive. Call a local shop and get an estimate, shouldn't be more than $60.

i recently purchased a 00 gsr with 123k miles. it goes through one quart of oil every 350-400 miles. my trusted mechanics says it is the piston rings, compression test shows as 165-175. so the compression is okay, they are within 10 psi of each other. another mechanic also a friend of mine, who works for a honda dealership thinks it is the valve seals. from reading on this forum, it can be either.
my car is in the shop now getting the head rebuilt. it is costing me about $600 for labor and materials, just valve seals. if there is more issues then of course the cost go up. keeping fingers crossed. the engine is pretty stock, and that shop said that they think it is the valve seals. at the same time, i am getting the timing belt and water pump replaced so in all it will cost me at least 1g.
i'll report back once i get it from the shop. hopefully i won't need to do the piston rings, i have been quoted to be a 1400 job. it depends if the cylinder is out of round if so it would need to be re bored then new pistons that would need to be sized and on and on.

A leakdown test will give you a better idea where the oil is going. Possibility's are: Valve Stem Seals, Valve Guides, Piston Rings, and the Unlikely PCV valve.

If you took it to the Honda dealership, I'm sure they already did everything else I would suggest.

With 123K, its good that your getting the timing belt & water pump replaced, you might save a few dollars in labor having all this done at once.

Oh and Welcome to Han!

Your piston rings are actually a set of rings not just one. If the oil ring goes bad you'll still have compression but it'll burn oil like no tomorrow. My 2000 gsr did the same thing around 110k. It'll smoke a crap load in the top end because of the extra pressure the motor gets put in. I replaced my valve seals around 80k. When that was problematic it would only smoke when the car was first started. Usually the oil will leak down the seals when it's not running and when you start the car it will burn that collected oil. Yes it will burn oil the whole time you're driving but not usually not enough to see alot of smoke. With the amount of oil you're burning with no gasket leaks is definately your rings.

Default what about

jut changing the rings without doing a whole rebuild? My '95 GSR has 210k miles and its smokes a little when you are really winding it out. It uses oil at about 600-700 miles per quart depending on how hard you beat it.

I guess you could also replace the pistons with new pistons of the same siZe, replace the con rod bearing and oil pump ,water pump and timing belt. I had the head redone when the timing belt broke so it has new valve seals.
