But the cop can still ticket anyone he wants if the exhaust is not stock, and he believes it MAY be over the legal limit. I've never heard of the Smog monitoring devices on roadways, but I have heard of the portable smog dynos that they have used in the past at the races.
The company that has a contract with many states is called BullDog Environmental or "Smog-dog" white astro vans with a red bulldog graffic sticker on the side of them.
Ask the cop to pull out his DBCT or DB Confirmation Tool. If he does not have one then you may ask him how he is so sure that your exhaust exceeds that noise level. Take your receipt and print out to court to fight it. The ticket is not appropriate if you were within parameters. The cop obviously thinks he can measure decibels like the Terminator.
I asked the Ref guy about cops carrying SPL meters when I was there and he said he had not heard anything about this and doubts it will happen. Maybe it was in one specific jurisdiction that this is going on?
