when i pull the lever, my hatch does pop off the lock. then i just raise it manually to open. i don't need to simultaneously unlock and lift the thing, so it sounds as if you have a problem.

either the hatch struts are too weak (they do hold up the hatch though, right?), or something is wrong with your locking mechanism..

are you saying that if you don't simultaneously lift the hatch as you unlock it, it will stay in position and remain locked?

I believe the cel for your electronic release might be bad or if nothing else the fuse.

Yes, I have to turn the lock key a quarter of a turn and hold it there and lift the hatch off the lock. Its get frustrating when I'm going shopping. I can't open my hatch with one hand.

At least now I know I have a problem with my locking mechanism. I got to figure out somehow to fix it.

Actually I hear the locking unit lock and unlock could just be really weak struts that prevents the hatch from being released from the lock.

For me the lever doesn't have any use. Even though the hatch is unlock I can't just pull it up. Yes it's unlocked. Maybe the struts arent strong enough to push it pass the lock.

Anways my point is I must insert my key and turn it to the right and hold it there. Then I have to use my other free hand to lift up the hatch.

Do you think I have a lock problem as well?
It's more than likely that the mechanism is broken, even though it's making the sound. I'm in the same situation with my 99, broken shocks, broken trunk release.

it took me a good week to figure out how to exactly work my trunk.

the trunk locks on the later model years (i think 98+) unlock with the power door locks.

to unlock the hatch unlock your doors and then move the hatch lever(in the middle of the hatch under the overhang) the left position from the right position help it up and release (or if it doenst go...push) the lever back to the right and shut to shut.

if this procedure isnt followed exactly the system doesnt know what state it's in. this can cause the hatch to pop up about a cm and then get stopped.

to remedy this open everything up the hatch, put the lever to the right and unlock the doors, push the latch to the left and let it snap back tot he right... it should close with no problem. follow the first procedure to open it and close it and you shouldnt have a problem.

i seriously thought my hatch was busted at first, but it turns out it's just a crappy peice of engineering.

sorry man, I'm not so clear on your explanation.. What do you mean when you say going through the procedure. I have a hatch lever on my driver door for my 99. Are you saying that I should move tha tfirst?

i'm guesing the model year change was for 00-01... i'm not sure how to mess with yours... i'd assume it's still tied into your power locks.... unlock the doors, and then try to open it

this might be the reason you always need the key

Yeah think that is for sure has to deal with the lock..maybe when i unlock something in the lock doesn't keep it put to allow the struts to push up the hatch.

Does anybody have any advice for this problem with unable to open the hatch with one hand because I have to insert a key hold it to the unlock position until the hatch is off the lock

I'll mess around some more.
