how often do yall have to pass emission tests? cuz if it's not that often that's a good deal to keep your car legal on emissions!

For cars built after 1973, smog inspections are req'd every two years... and you're obligated to smog the car before selling it, as further proof that you're not selling a gross polluting POS.

New cars aren't inspected until their fourth year of operation, then it's every two years after that...for the life of the vehicle. The 30 year rolling exemption was terminated by Assemblywoman Lieber's bill last summer. :a:

Well, your friend and the guy he's paying off will be in a LOT of trouble when CARB finds out about this. Fines and jail sentences are not out of the question.

It's bad enough that he's not running a cat.
Plenty of high-flow cats are affordable and available.
IMO, it's very irresponsible to not run a cat on a street-driven car.

And as long as people aren't willing to help control emissions on their own, the state will continue to dictate what we can and cannot do. The current laws are ridiculous, I agree. But the more that people ignore them, the more tight-assed our laws will become.

Also added to TheOtherDaves comments if you fail smog, and the retest, every year they will make you smog your car because they consider your car a gross polluter

As much I agree with your sentiment, don't make our state sound like the Third Reich. :nono:

Besides, there is a "way out" of all this mess.
Buy and 1973 or older car and go hog-wild.

Personally I am looking into a number of options to replace my DC Integra with a restored car from the late 60's, early 70's. I love the suicide door Lincoln Continentals, but OTOH, the idea of a restomod Challenger AAR is awfully tempting. :naughty:

But that's best kept for another thread, in the Basement. h:

Back on topic: Smog Legality in California...

There's still hope for the rest of the Union..

We, as enthusiasts, need to be responsible about our duty to keep the air clean. That is the best defense against a rabid bureaucracy like CARB.

That's why I get so mad about people running test pipes, just because they can. For the 3-5 hp, you pollute 100 to 150 times more than a cat-equipped car. And it's only a matter of time before their state legislature steps in and starts bullying consumers around, just like they do here in CA.

As an example, I just got rogered with an $80 smog check, because some bureaucrat in Sacramento read a report advocating the use of dyno-based smog checks. CARB has people like us over a barrel, and the cost of compliance keeps rising.

I don't wish this level of scruitiny on anyone; I hope that we can police ourselves and be pro-active about controlling pollution while enjoying our hobby.

Class dismissed. :chuckles: h:
