Default Desperate need of help!

Okay I have a serious problem. I took off at a light and I hit vtec going through first, second, to third, as I was shifting to fourth I put it in to second as if I was shifting to fourth. So I was at 8 grand in third, when it engaged to second it went to 10 grand. There is no rev limiter because of my ECU. So now as I drive there is a real bad ticking in the motor, the car still seems to drive okay, still can go through vtec fine. It still idles normal, even when starting up in the cold weather. Also, when it happened there was a bad smell , no smoke, but a bad smell mainly during vtec. Burning something?! Remember I have stage 1 cams. If you could please give me some imput on what you think could be wrong Id appreciate it. The main thing is the loud ticking.

Thanks!

So I guess you mean the smell wasn't clutch or a burning metal smell.

I'm not really sure but I think you may just need a valve adjustment and maybe a new valve or two.
I'm no mechanic though so if I'm off, please no one kill me.

i think you may be right.

the likelihood of you bending valves during this maneuver is pretty high.... have it checked out and dont run it hard until you have....

Baby the poor car, and have a qualified mechanic take a look at the valves with the cover off. I'd venture to say you bent at least one, and if not that, your valves could be highly out of spec.

Damage is more likely to happens to springs and retainers and rockers than to the valves themselves. If you had bent a valve, there'd be significant damage to the piston and the engine would most likely be out of commission already.

Definitely take the car to a mechanic well versed with VTEC motors.. check the valve clearance, inspect the retainers. Also look over the VTEC solenoid, the hydraulic system & confirm that the small locking pins in the center rocker arm are not bent, and that they are properly engaging the outer rocker arms. All of this can be done without taking the head off the block.

You may need new valvesprings and retainers, but I'd be surprised if you need new valves.

In the future, I'd look into an ignition based rev limiter. h:
