type r suspension mods
If I were you I would go with a koni adjustable and ground controls. This is good b/c ground controls can be ordered with custom spring rates at no extra charge. I have konis with 450 lb/in in front, and 650 lb/in in rear. also with the konis you can have them revalved to be "matched" to the springs. all of this is still cheaper than a set of teins. Also a 25 mm rear sway bar is perfect for this set up. cusco, suspension techniques and eibach make a 25 mm rear sway bar for the itr. Like the other people said the type r suspension is just about perfect. but increasing the rear rate to about 200 lb/in can reduce understeer permantely. the larger rear sway bar does this too.
this set up works. after many many track days and talking to tons of honda guys.
my type r pulled just under 1g on flaken azenis. I got a .98. not sure how correct it is but with race tires I could definitly break the 1g mark.
I know many people that race in the honda challenge. and they all have a very similar set up. but with higher spring rates. If any of you read the scc with the 25 hours of thunderhill in it (June '04). the yellow civic has rates of 700 and 900 lb/in. with larger rear sway bar and no front bar.

I think that part of the problem is that Koni doesn't really market their dual-adjustable racing dampers very much or very well. Everybody buys Koni Yellow thinking that's all there is and that's the best they have. Then we end up revalving them as we up the spring rates.
But they're still Koni Yellow and they're still one-way adjustable only.
Buddy Club seems to be the way most of my racing acquaintances are going, but some other big names are represented, too.
I still have revalved Koni Yellow and Ground Control on my personal car. 500# (9.1K) Front / 800# (14.5K) Rear. This year is the first time I feel that the damping is a problem and I want something else, I think.
Not sure what I'm doing yet, but I'm fixing to make a move.

I think the Koni Yellow/Ground Control way of doing it is still a good way to start your progress away from the OEM ITR suspension. Just be ready for the day you think you've outgrown it.
yes I do agree with you. a 1 way adjustable will never be as good as a 2 way adjustable. and a "home made" system will never out due a well engineered threaded coilover system. but I still drive my car on the street. And 1g for a street car isn't bad. I will soon go to the double adjustable adj. konis. as soon as I blow my single adj. konis. but to be able to catch up to a porsche gt3 in the corner isn't bad.
BUT the good thing about ground control is that their springs can be traded very easily. I have experimented with different rates and this set up suits my driving skill. plus I can drive to ucsb the next morning.
But I wouldn't underestimate koni. I have seen really serious cars and their owners boasting about how good koni is. especially the honda challenge guys here in california. at tracks like thunderhill, willow srings, infineon etc.

I just got omni power full coilover kit for my 2001 R, I heard so many good things about it. so I went for it.. can't wait to get them installed.
currently on EIBACH SPRINGS AND TOKIKO SHOCKS LOWERED SUSPENTION

ground control actually will revalve the konis for you. or find a good speed shop and they can send them off to be revalved. I had mine done by motorsport dynamics in sacramento, CA. tons of places can revalve konis.
