Granted, cops don't like detectors, and you might be more likely to get out of a ticket if they don't see one - but even if they see one, they're not going to "give you a bigger ticket because of it".[/quote:0f1839c9e2]
No to the first statement...but he might pursue your court case aggressively, and show up to testify. Might give testimony of reckless driving, etc...putting you in more of a world of hurt. There are asshole cops out there, and some are worse when you piss them off more.
I once got pulled over flying down a moderately busy road near my home at around midnight and as i was turning off onto my side street a cop flashed his lights and pulled me over. I didn't see him and my radar detector didn't pick up anything. I was in a bad mood and acted beligerant when he said, "I clocked u going 90 down this road" so i said "Whatever my car can't even handle that (hheheh  ) plus u didn't clock me" and he saw i had a radar detector and then said "Well i had to go 100 to catch up to u" so he saw my license and registration and said "Lets try to slow it down" and i got off with a warning!! I think Radar detectors are helpful especially if a cop see's u have one that way they can't lie about clocking u at xxx speed.

I hate to say this, but I'll occasionally call someone to see where the radar is set if I'm in a hurry. Very often, the answer on the safer Interstates is 80!
In other words, they're not even going to pull out after you unless you trip the alarm because you're going over 80.
I have never found that Virginia was especially harsh on speeding, and I have frankly been astonished at the number of tickets I hear about.
It seems to me that they could be a lot tougher than they really are.

Prohibiting radar detectors doesn't mean that they are harsher on speeding than elsewhere. I don't know if Chris really intended to say this because he actually has heard something about their enforcement, or if it was just an unfortunate choice of words when asking about why Virginia prohibits radar detectors.
Some states are harsher on speeding than others, though. I travel extensively around the Midwest, and from what I've seen, Indiana is harsher than elsewhere, and Michigan is more lenient than elsewhere. Places that are harsh will pull people over for as little as 10 mph over the limit or less, while places that are lenient will let people drive 20 mph over with relative impunity. Of course, this is all just a matter of general impressions; if you're the one motorist who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, you can get caught anywhere at any illegal speed.
