If you are pulling the stock B18A and dropping in another B18A/B or B20B/Z, an average weekend mechanic can do it no sweat. It's not hard, just time consuming.

I see, now the difficult part is finding a "weekend mechanic" and a price quote. Any ideas? Has anyone here ever "paid" someone else to do such a thing?

I mean, with a friend's help you can most likely do it yourself over a weekend.
Id say $800. Then when you get the car, pull the engine, put a new head gasket, water pump and timing belt in it. along with getting the radiator flushed and then check the thermostat.

I dont think it was driven too far in overheated stage. Visually the engine looks fine, its when he started it was when he heard loud sounds. Why would i need to pull the engine to change the head gasket and water pump? U can do that with it in(except for the water pump, you just gotta unbolt an engine mount).
I pulled an engine out and put an identical engine back into my car in about 2 days. Acutally only working on it for about 16 hours cummulative.
That seems extremely quick. Did you have experience pulling engines before you did that job? I havn't done it yet, I do however do minor preventive maintenance.
