Default Need engine diagnosis....

Heres the deal. I had a b18c5 swap in my 97GSR 4dr. It was raining really hard one night and my CAI is really low. It was starting to suck water so i decided to pull over on a ramp and wait out the rain... well there was a big puddle awaiting me on the off ramp. Engine died as i went through it. Got it started later that night....the next day i was driving my car and the block cracked....

I recently got a new block assembly, and had the old head taken to a machine shop and all new valves put in and totally checked out. The motor is all together in my garage now. My friend who is a mechanic has been working on it for a few days. Theres a couple problems though, It idles really rough, vtec does not kick in, and its seems to be smoking quite a bit. He hasn't had much experience with this type of motor so hes kind of stumped.

If anyone has any ideas, id appreciate them alot. Thanks alot.

If the ECU has been disconnected from the battery the whole time you had the motor being worked on, it is already reset.

What kind of smoke are we talking?
White, Black, Blue, in the exhaust or on the engine itself?
How long have you run the engine since the overhaul?
Did you get new piston rings in the process?

Are you positive that all vacuum lines are hooked up correctly?
Is the PCV valve hooked up on the IM?

Its white smoke in the exhaust. we've had the motor running for about an hour max, drove it to an exhaust shop, and just in our garage trying to figure the idling issue out.
the entire block assembly is new from the dealer and it came with new rings.
i just called the mechanic and he said hes sure all the lines are hooked up and so is the PCV.
And the gasket is from auto zone he said.

That tells me that coolant is getting into your combustion chamber, somehow. If all the obvious things have been checked, it's possible that your head-gasket didn't seat properly. Did he use a manual (Haynes or Helms) to torque the head bolts in proper sequence and to specified ft/lbs ?

Following an overhaul, there will generally be a minimal amount of blow-by until the rings seat properly. I wouldn't be trying to rev into vtec until break-in is complete. Check your oil to see if it is contaminated with water beeds (coolant). It would be worth while to drain the oil out and look at it. Then replace with fresh oil. Check the coolant as well, for oil specs.
