Civing dying while driving. (help 1stGenCrx!)
Hi, I have a 2000 Honda Civic 2 EX. It randomly shuts off while driving at speed, accelerating, or while not moving at all. It does this while warm or cold. The electrical part of the ignition has been changed and the fuel/air filters changed. The car continues to buck and jerk and completely cut off at times, and then restarts after a few seconds, carrying on like nothing happened. Sometimes it continues to jerk, or just won't start at all momentarily. Please help me before I pull all of my hair out. The dealer has done all checkups and tune-ups. . And can't find a problem. They replaced the Cat because that's what code the ECU receives. I don't know what else to do. The OBD check engine light comes on again (2 months after the cat was replaced) and it shows two codes, the one for CAT back pressure efficiency and one for ???? it doesn't know. Please help me. It's got 40,000 miles. It has been doing this for four months and progressively getting worse. I could barely make a 6 mile trip today.
my best friends civic did that to...right before it went through a main bearing...dont know if thats the same problem you may have...but...thats the experience i have had with that same problem..with the same year and model civic
My 93 Corrado was doing the same thing but not as severe like you are describing. Just was doing the "buck and jerk" thing. All I did was clean the fuel system because there was some type of debris in the fuel so it got in the injectors and such.
All I can say is to start with the basics, fuel filters, fuel system cleaner, ignition check, O2 sensors.

To me, it sounds like a fuel starvation problem. My best educated guess would be to test the Fuel Injection Main Relay on the car make sure it's doing it's job. If I were you, I'd wire in a circuit breaker or fuse into one of the wires coming out of the relay to the fuel injectors. And when the fuse blows or you hear the circuit breaker click. Replace the fuse or wait for the circuit breaker to reset and replace the Fuel Injection Main Relay. Because from what I know, the Fuel Injectors are just some sort of relay that needs to be grounded. Hope that helps.. If you've got more electrical problems, send them my way..
i had that problem with my 98 civic too... what i did was took in my battery and got it check out.. it turn out to be that the car battery was bad it wouldn't recharge so it didnt have enough power to run everything so the car just kept on shutting off and coming back on.. once i replace it, the car ran fine and never ran into that problem again... i don't know if that's the case with your car, but you can take the battery in to any auto shop (autozone, pepboys) and have them test it for you at no cost.. if the battary needs to be charge they'll charge it for free too...
I may be able to offer some help with this problem. I had an 87 Prelude that had the EXACT problem. What it turned out to be is a small part called an igniter. I am not sure that the newer cars even have these but it may be worth looking into. My car would do the exact same thing, I would be driving and out of the blue everything would shut off. Then all of a sudden it would come back on. It also got worse with time but once I replaced the igniter (in the cap) all was good again
I hope that maybe this helps. Good Luck!
