Default my timing is screwed

i just recently checked my timing and there are no markings when the light flashes so i tried adjusting my timing retard and advance and no matter which way i go there are no markings, could my timing be really advanced or really retarded to the point you cant see it on the pulley. a local speed shop installed my crower cam, and when they installed it the cam was set at 9' advance. but according to the cam card its supposed to be on an intake centerline of 106' if using the "lobe center" method. so right now my idle is kinda low sometimes like between 200-500 and sometimes its regular for a little while. my engine is a d16y8 auto and i do have a new IAC valve, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, ignition, clean filter and vacuum lines. what could the problem be? maybe the cam/ignition timing is off? what would you recommend i set the cam at and my timing at?

thanks

possibly everything is running fine, just turn up ur idle a bit to avoid it going too low and bogging.

Your timing is probably fine. The timing belt can't be off by more than about 2 teeth, cuz if it was you'd either have pistons hitting valves, or be extremely close to pistons hitting valves, in which case your car woudln't idle worth a damn. It would sputter, stall, and shake like crazy.

Wrong, your car won't run with it off by that much... it's a safety feature...

The timing is probably ok, my first guess is that you don't have the timing light attached to the proper cylinder... Cars won't really run much if the timing is off by all that much... raise the idle to around 800 and then check your #1 cylinder and then the timing...

Don't you have to jump the service connector inside the car under the dash on the passenger side to get an accurate reading?

haha, yup otherwise your ECU is pulling timing dynamically, jumping the timing connector (CEL code connector). Makes the ECU use static timing.

Got it?

The jumper is also used to get the CEL to flash the codes, do a search for that, to find a description of the jumper. Maybe I'll take a picture in a couple of days.

dude, go back to working on camaro's...

hahah, just ****ing with ya, let us know how it goes.

It's cool that you know how to check timing, but it's just a tad different on the hondas, heheh.

Aren't there two styles of timing guns, which are you using?
