Wrong, your car won't run with it off by that much... it's a safety feature...

The timing is probably ok, my first guess is that you don't have the timing light attached to the proper cylinder... Cars won't really run much if the timing is off by all that much... raise the idle to around 800 and then check your #1 cylinder and then the timing...
