I pulled my b18b1 and am in process of installing a b18c1. The motor is in for the most part. The fluids have been refilled. I tried to start it and it turned over right away but backfired real loud. The whole distributor was out so I reinstalled it. Could that be misaligned and causing the backfires? I was told that the accelorator cables for the vtec motors are longer than the non vtec motors. Is that true. I can't figure out how to set the cable. Any feedback would be a help. Thanks...so close yet so far away...

i dont know off the top of my head if itwas longer or shorter, but i'm pretty sure the gsr cable was longer because the way the GSR intake manifold is designed.

as for your backfiring, did you make sure the timing belt was lined up correctly in relation to the crank? its a long shot, but u wont know for sure unless you check. where did u source your b18c1 from? swaps always have mystery history's so you have to make sure all your base are belong to us, i mean all your bases are covered.

I didn't check the timing. The guy who pulled it said it was good to go. The only thing I messed with is the distributor. I'm sure I'll end up checking the timing. I'll keep you updated...

It's hard to get the distributor in wrong, it's keyed so it will only go in one way. Not sure if the timing could be that far out, just check and make sure the bolts that hold it in are in the center of the slots. That will give you a good base to start with. I would check and make sure you have all your plug wires in the right place, sounds like that may be your problem since you removed it all.

The timing is out so we're gonna adjust it tom. As for the wires, I followed the haynes manual. I'm gonna get new plugs.

I'm finally gonna adjust the timing. I hope that this will cure my problem of runnig like shit and backfiring something fierce. I hope there is no valve damage. The belt didn't break, though.

Double check the firing order on your distributor, and set the ignition timing with a timing light.

Ignition timing will not affect piston to valve clearance, so unless you removed the timing belt for some reason you should be fine.

The timing is good. We installed a new water pump, tensioner and timing belt. Everything is lined up so I don't know what's up. It's still backfiring really loud and idling rough. I did the compression test and it's good(about 160psi for all). I might have to take it to a professional...:wtc: Nothing ever comes easy for me...Oh yeah, the parts guys at the Acura dealer swear that I need the throttle cable for the gas pedal to throttle body hook up. The book says the throtte is for the automatic. I told them I need the accelerator cable but they look at me like I'm nuts...Does anyone agree...
