Default Boosting My d16z6

hello everyone i am new to the site and to honda cars for that matter. i am planning on building a turbo d16 motor in my 95 civic ex. i was just wondering what turbo will start spooling at 2500-3000rpm and have full boost by 3500-4000rpm. I plan on running stock interals for a while with 6-8 psi and lowering compression with thick head gasket. let me know what the best set up would be for this kind of power.

You never mentioned any power goals.
Do a bit of research and you'll learn a lot. There is no point in wasting bandwidth being redundant. It's a great motor to start with....all stock.

16g would be perfect.. its the turbo off the gsx.. pretty small but it'll do your motor justice.. dont get anything too big.. it spools fast.. spools completely at 3700 rpms.

I would like to get about 175-200whp as well as 175-200ft/lb of tq. on stock internals with thick head gasket. is the gsx 2nd gen talon or elcipse? what is best for tuning hondata, crome, or uberdata? how much boost could i run and still be safe to drive it daily. thanks for the help

One of my favorite turbo's for a daily driven sohc is a garrett t3 (.48 hot .42 cold). It spools quick and makes decent power. You could always go with a small trimmed t3t4 and gain more top-end power, but IMO the t3 should get you to your goals with a quick enough spool for daily driving.
Don't bother with a thicker headgasket it's a waste of money. I believe your motor only runs 9.5:1 compression (maybe it's 9.6:1) so lowering it would be a waste of money. many of stock d16's have pumped out 220+whp and been daily driven with no problems.
I like hondata personally, but thats just me.
Tune your motor to your desired power, if it takes 5psi or 12psi it doesn't matter. boost pressure won't blow your engine, poor tuning and exceeding the power limits of your stock motor will blow it though.
10psi on a 16g is totally different then 10psi on a t3t4, you cant set limitations by boost pressure.

ok well to a degree, such as my set-up, i'll be tuning to the edge of the turbo's peak efficiency (about 25psi) in hopes of about 450-500whp. Once beyond the turbo's peak efficiency then boost pressure plays a role, as the higher you go the less efficent the turbo is and the more heat your puming into the motor.
Example in my case would be this (remember this is just an example, the number are just hypothetical)
Say my turbo peaks at about 25psi on my motor. If i'm running say 20psi and making 425whp and then crank it up to 24psi I may gain another 60hp as where if i'm running say 25psi making 500whp and I crank it up to 28psi I may only gain 10whp or I may even loose some power because I've gone past the surge limit of the turbo and it's now operating out of it's peak efficiency range. You don't have to worry about that on your motor though. I just wanted to add that disclaimer just incase.....you never know.

Thanks for all of the info. It sounds like the t3 or the 16g would be my best bet as far as turbo goes for my motor. My idea with the thicker head gasket was to lower compression which a stock d16z6 I believe is (9.2:1) so that i can run more boost safely, thus putting more torque in the engine. I would ideally like to have approxiamently the same amount of hp as tq. I am just looking into things so that i can show my dad what is best for my car and what will work efficently for sohc. My is really into cars but doesnt really no much about hondas. He doesnt think my motor having 139000 miles would be worth boosting at any psi. I personally know somebody in town with a 97 sohc-t civic ex that runs 8psi on stock internals daily driven for 2 years with no problems. It seems to run really strong right now all I have done to it so far is AEM short ram, ground control coilovers, and regular maintence, spark plugs, plug wires, drive axles, and frequent fluid changes.

p.s. what is a good exhaust for this application i was thinking 2.5 cat back with borala turbo muffler.

I also plan on rebuilding entire motor before to long. Say less than 2 years after its been turboed. I really appreciate all the advice. Here is the plans as far as with the turbo. Dsm 450cc injectors, walbro 255lph fuel pump, oil cooler, arp head studs, all custom intercooler piping and manifold done by www.alienauto.com and some sort of ems. Let me know on other possible mods.

Welcome to the site. I look forward to seeing what you can get out of this project, though it has been done before, because I have the same engine in my 94 Ex. If I happen on any new info I'll pass that along too, so keep us informed.
