B18B tranny/clutch question
I have a 95 LS. At idle my car makes a weird knocking/clattering noise. When i press the clutch down it stops and sounds ok. When i accelerate from a dead stop in first it makes the same type of noise and seems to go away as i gain speed, could be that i just can't hear it anymore.
anyone know what this is? i'm gonna be dropping the tranny to have a look at the clutch, maybe a release bearing? What about a main tranny bearing?
any help would be great then maybe i could order the part ahead of time and not have my car in pieces waiting for parts
Thanks.

yea my car makes same noise when im driving and i press clutch in the hitting noise stops... now AZ said it could be my cv joint, but that made me think... how could it be that if the noise also happens when the car is stopped... so AZ could just be retarded... i have a new clutch ima put in so ill see if that makes noise stop...
Throwout bearing. I have the same problem. Does it sound like an accessory belt squeaking but coming from the tranny case?
TBs that aren't properly lubed or aren't even replaced after a clutch job will squeak. There is no need for concern, either drop the tranny and lube the bearing or live with the noise.

Kinda does sound like an accessory belt, definately coming from the tranny. i had a very experienced mechanic drive my car today and he said it is a bearing on the input shaft... I'll post a thread when i drop the tranny and have a look, hopefully i have time damnit.
I was also thinking of the throwout bearing though, to me it seems that it would be a bearing that has to do with the clutch, not the tranny... bah i dunno i'll post when i dO! :irock:

The throwout bearing is what pushes against the pressure plate of the clutch. When the clutch is engaged (NOT pressing on the clutch pedal), that bearing can make loose, rattly noises. When you press the pedal to disengage the clutch, it loads up the bearing, pushing it together & it gets quieter.
The tranny shafts all have bearings, but the input shaft bearing can act almost like that. Here's one way to tell, maybe your mechanic did this...
Idle in neutral, clutch engaged (pedal NOT pressed down). It should be making the noise. As you begin pressing down the clutch pedal a T-O bearing gets quiet. A tranny shaft bearing doesn't get quiet until the shaft stops spinning, after you press the clutch pedal most of the way down.
Another way... Idle in neutral, making noise. Press the clutch pedal down suddenly & quickly. A T-O bearing gets quiet instantly, while the tranny shaft takes a couple seconds to coast to a stop.
