Passport only clicks when trying to start
For the last couple of days, when I try to start my '95 Passport, all I get are dash lights and a click. Then other times, it starts right up! After checking my battery with a voltmeter, I get 12V, so it's not that. Could it be the starter? Are they difficult to replace? I do most of my own maintenance, but don't want to get in over my head!
Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the starter solenoid is dying, but since it's attached to the starter, you have to replace the whole unit. I can't comment on the difficulty of the change since I have not worked on one, but starters are normally left in a fairly easy to get to place.

You have to drop the exhaust to do it. Also when you go to get the part get it from Isuzu, its usually cheaper. I dont think its really that hard to actually do. My job is in parts at the local honda dealer and for the starter through us it was around $300....from Isuzu it was $217.
Starters are usually held in place by like 2 bolts, but there's usually stuff in the way that you have to take off, as was pointed out. In the meantime, if you need to get somewhere and it acts up again, you can hit it with something blunt, and that'll sometimes get it to engage the flywheel.
Before you replace the starter, check all of your grounds, also if you are mechanically inclined, you can take the starter apart and clean it. This was a huge issue with the ST16x series of Celica's. I cleaned all my grounds, and the starter and it worked fine after that until it was written off, and that was about for 2 years.
Something to consider.

before you do anything.
even though your battery reads 12v on a multimeter doesnt mean it has enough amperage to turn the motor over. try having someone jump your car first. 9 times out of 10 its just borderline bad battery.
