Default Thanks to 01Accord - Information Right on the Money

[quote=01ACCORD]Okay, here you go. Now, when you remove the two bolts (C) the place they thread into can be held with an open end wrench if it spins. Remember, you don't push the piston back in on these, you take a big screwdriver and screw it in, and one more caution. Wrap the brake fluid resevoir under the hood with a rag. Mine overflowed when I screwed the pistons in.

Good luck!

I just did the rear brake pads and rotors on my wife's 2000 Accord. The pictures and manual excerpts were just what I needed. Aside from having to purchase an impact driver to extract the rotor retaining screws, the repair went flawlessly!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again for the great information.

One question: which Accord repair manual is better Chiltons or Haynes??

Hayes is usually better. Watch out for new edition coming out in Jan. 2006 (Accord 1998-2002). Also why not paying $60 or so for a factory service manual from helm Inc.?

Default Brake job 02 Accord

Thanks to the instruction posted I saved $100, (knock on wood) and did it myself. 1 hour later and I was in business. I took an hour because I was being careful. Probably a 1/2 hour job for experienced mechs.

Question, besides the lift points where can a guy put a jack?

Default Rears Worn Out Before Fronts and Other Weird Stuff

Thanks to the info in this thread I was able to replace the rear brake pads on my 2002 Accord EX-V6 Coupe at about 45k miles. I'm now at 61k miles and the front brake pads still have significant material left (they're the originals). It surprised me the rears wore out first. Have other Accord owners had that happen?

On to the more pressing issue...

I have new front brake pads and was about to change the fronts since they are getting so high in mileage. Looking at the pads that are about to be replaced, I see that the inside front pads are worn unevenly. The inside curved edge of the inside front pads is rounded over. The outside radius of the inside front pads is also rounded over but not nearly as bad. Looking at the rotors while they're on the car, I see that the rotor surface near the axis of the rotor on the inside face is raised significantly. The inside radius of the pad is riding against this and being rounded. I've attached two pictures. In each of them, you can see that the inside edge surface area is not planar with the rest of the pad. Has anyone ever seen this before? I am not just going to put new pads on because if I did they would be contacting at the edges and not across the majority of the surface.

These are the original rotors and original pads. Seems to me that the rotor is defective. Any chance of getting the local Honda dealer to put new rotors on without charging, even though I'm well past my warranty mileage? The reality is that if I had worn through front pads in 30k miles like a lot of people do, this issue would have been discovered then...

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I just did a complete brake job last week on my 2001 with 140k on it. The rotors are original and had no noticible pulsing. I had them al turned for $70, and $40 for the front pads and $45 for the rear (OEM parts).

The pad are so easy to change I can do all 4 in less than an hour.

I did have an issue on one front rotor. The philips head set screws would not budge, even with an impact driver. I just drilled the heads off, and once the rotor was off, used a screw extractor. Piece of cake. I put all new screws in just for good measure, with anti-sieze on it.

If you have the rotors turned (or replaced), wash them with dish washing detergent and try not to touch the surface when you put them back on. You want the surface clean, and grease free. They will probably rust over before you even finsh the job. This is a good sign that there is no greas on them.

WARNING, you will probably need to remove some brake fluid. Wrap the resivoir with a rag around the edge in case it overflows. Remember, when you push the caliper pistons back in, the fluid will rise.

Like you guys, my 01 Accord LXV6 also needs brake pads. I have not yet done a brake job but I need to do the same to my Maxima as well. I found very nice Maxima Instructions at http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/300 . Since I will be replacing pads and rotors on the Maxima, I don't have issues there.

But since this is a Honda forum, back to my Accord. The Dealer just did my 45K service (last one from my maintenance agreement) and gave me the bad news that the rear brake pads are at 2 mm and the fronts at 5 mm. I am thinking about doing the rear job first. I have printed off 01ACCORD's posted JPGs. Since I don't have any shakes/vibrations while braking and have never gotten the rotors turned on the car. So, is it OK to just replace the pads or do I absolutely have to get the rotors turned. Stealer quoted me $150 for the rear brake job. Any tips on where to buy parts on-line? Hondaautomotiveparts wants a $5 handling fee in addition to $12 shipping. Any where else I can get the parts for cheaper?

Also, if someone could post better scans of the front brakes, it would be awesome.

Default Caliper pins

Hi Guys,
I'm real glad i found this website, just sorry it wasn't sooner, it could've saved myself a lot of grief. I managed to figure out the replacement of the brake pads. The only thing that I've not been able to get off my mind is the Caliper pins. One was marked with an "L" and the other with a "G". I removed them without noticing which one goes on top and which one goes on the bottom. Does it make a difference? I have put them back but I kind of just picked at random.

First off this is my first post so thanks in advance for any help. I have a 2003 Accord 4-DR V6 and during this weekends tire rotation noticed that the back brakes need to be replaced soon. So I was looking for pics for an ’03 service manual and instruction for this model covering both back and front. I know its pretty straight forward but just like to know the specifics like torque etc.

Thanks, Tom

Just wondering about the images in jschmid's post. I think they are HELM manual scans for front brake replacement. They are coming up as broken icons. Is there a way I can get them.. thanks
