Default built LS vs LS/VTEC?

i wanted to know whats a better route? ls built or ls/vtec, im getting an ls long block for a pair of rims i have , i can locate a b series tranny for dirt cheap, as well as the intake manifold and accessories. this past weekend at carlisle i saw a built ls and i jus loved the way the motor idled, it was "sexy" the motor im getting ima open it up cause i dunno anything about its history.

i wanna go all motor so what do u think is best for me? this motor is gonna go in my 89 crx si.

well i definitely dont know what your best route would be but i'm gettin a B18A1 for my 91 hatch DX...gotta swap it to manual which will be a bia but oh well...good learning experience...anyways back to the topic...when i do this i'm gonna build it up to high compression like probly 11 to 1 and do all kinds of head work and maybe a slight boring and honing to the cylinders...it wont be really high hp...lookin for maybe 170 or 180 at the flywheel and about 150 tq...later

ls turbo, you can run like 10psi saftely on it (ask txhatch about his setup). ls/vtec is overrated unless its done right which is more money than its worth in the long run

LSvtec will be more streetable IMO because of the smoother idle. But anyways, who cares about streetable. I'd rather hear the growl of a crower [or jun, toda, whatever] valvetrain at idle, than the soft purr of LSV at idle.

the potential power of both engines will prolly be about the same in the end. i dont know much about the two engines tho

A built LS will NEVER compare to an LS/VTEC unless the LS is turbo, or the LS/VTEC is done absolutely wrong.

Or am I missing something?

Speaking of cams
Does someone have any experience with cams for the B18A?
I'm talking crower level 2 or something similar.

LSV will have much more power than a built LS, but as rough cams, PnP, hi comp, etc etc come into play, they start evening out.

I've never seen a built LS making over 160 at the wheels.

A decently built (like my friend's) should start at 160 at the wheels.

You start adding to either motor from there, exponentially, and tell me how exactly it's even? I've owned an LS and now I've got the R. A decent LS/VTEC should be on par or better than my engine stock.

Make an LS do that, please.

i was talking to a friend and he said when he was back in high skool him and his friends built an ls motor, that was pushing close to 220hp to the wheels, his compression was up high it was i think either 13:1 or 15:1 with some wicked sized cams and fulley ported head etc. he said that that was without anything just all motor.

im amazed on how you havent seen a b18a/b not go over the 160hp limit, they must have all been poorley tuned.the thing thats scaring me is the price for a b16a head is gonna be alot, for that i mihgt as well just stick in a complete b16.i also like the idle ona worked b18a/b, but then again an ls/vtec if done right should be on the same level a b18c5 as stated above.

does any1 have any dyno sheets of a b18a/b with mild head work, and mild bottom end work?
