Default Clutch kit question.

Just killed my trans and bought another clutch kit while i'm at it. It's from Pep Boys. It's a Luk Repset for my 91 CRX Si. The kit came with the pressure plate, clutch disk, release bearing, clutch alignment tool, and one more little bearing that i have no idea where it goes or what it is. And as luck would have it, the kit came with no instructions. I've done a clutch before on my 86 Crx, and do not remember this little bearing. I've actually changed the whole motor on my 86(sold and long gone now). Anyway, it's about the diameter of a quarter or a little bigger. Does anybody know where it goes, or did it just come with the kit by accident? Thanks for any info.

That would be the pilot bearing. Check your flywheel, you will prolly need to press it in.

Thanks. Do you need to take the flywheel off to get it out and put the new one in? The last clutch i did, i did not change this bearing.

Yeah you do need to take the flywheel off. It is always a good idea to change the pilot bearing everytime you do a clutch job.

The pilot bearing comes in the kit because you need to replace it at the same time.

It's really fun when you get a kit that fits multiple vehicles... in my case, I got a clutch kit for my '86 RX-7 that came with two pilot bearings. One is for the Rotary N/A cars with the M type transmission, and the other... well, I think i's for B-series pickup trucks. They share the same M trans, but the Rotary vs. pissed-on differences would need a differently sized pilot.

If your talking about the pilot bearing, you've got to take off the flywheel, then you just tap it out with a hammer. It comes out of the side that's against the motor;therefore, of course, removal of the flywheel is an absolute must. I've changed clutches before without doing the pilot bearing and never had a prob. I guess the reason i never replaced it was becasue none of my clutch kits ever came with this bearing. I never knew what this bearing was until recently. Makes you curious though, what would happen if this little bearing did sieze up?

I don't think it will seize up, a normal clutch change happens at maybe 100k and mine was toasted at 32k.

They don't really seize up, they just break into peices. When that happens, you suffer from all kinds of trans inputput shaft problems because it is now free to bounce around.

I've been sufferering random input shaft problems lately, so I have a clutch kit and new pilot bearing waiting for me to get off my ass and fix it.
