Default axle clicking

if my axle clicks, does that mean that it's the inner or outer c.v. joint, or could it be either? thanks.

i was wondering if it is the INNER or OUTER, though, or if there is any way to tell. i'm going to need my inner to put on a 87-89 LS axle, so i don't want to reuse it if it's bad. thanks.

Clicking is outer. Get under the car and see if the boot is blown. I just changed out my axles today and its a pretty straightforward, easy job.

A half-shaft is about $89-99USD at a parts store and it includes two new joints. I've always heard if one joint is going (the boot tears, then the joint gets eaten by sand), the other's not far behind. Both times I've had a bad joint, I've done the full shaft. I don't see how it could involve any more labor and definintely less than if you have to do it all again to replace the inner joint! I call it 'insurance'. -scott

I replaced my halfshaft on my honda yesterday and it was a piece of cake to do. I learned from doing the one on my mazda that you just replace the whole shaft, replacing the boot is not worth the time or effort. We spent hours trying to get parts off the old shaft to get to the inner boot cause if its the inner boot you have to take off the outter boot too. Its a pain. Just replace the whole thing.

can i buy an inner c.v. joint rebuild kit from anywhere? i have a new complete axle for an 89 integra that i am going to use, but i have to use my existing inner joint since i have a b16a. i looked for a rebuild kit, but couldn't seem to find one, and i hear a faint clicking when i am driving straight, so i guess my inner joint is bad also. thanks.

Rebuilt axles are so cheap, don't even bother with trying to rebuild one. It's not easy.
