Porsche's 2003 911 GT3 to hit North America by mid-'03
Porsche has made official its plan to introduce the 911 GT3, an ultra high performance version of its 911 Carrera Coupe sports car, to the world market next year. Due in spring of 2003, the GT3 will be the most powerful non-turbocharged Porsche ever offered for street use in North America.
]
Based on the previous 911 GT3 that was not available in North America, the 2003 GT3 features a 3.6-liter, flat- six producing 380-hp and 285 lb-ft of torque. With a power output at 105 horsepower per liter, the engine propels the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, from 0 to 100 mph in 9.4 seconds, and to a top track speed of 190 mph, according to Porsche. To handle this increased performance, the transmission is fitted with transmission oil cooling and injection oil lubrication and has undergone some additional reinforcements.
The most striking visual feature of the new 911 GT3 is its rear wing, which increases directional stability at high speeds and downforce for fast corning. Combining a redesigned front apron, the GT3 achieves an drag coefficient of .30.
The GT3 also features a sports suspension, wider and lighter wheels, and wider tires. Front wheels are 8.5 inches wide fitted with 235/40 ZR 18 tires, and rear wheels are 11 inches wide with 295/30 ZR 18 tires.
Brakes on the GT3 feature six-piston, rather than the previous four-piston monobloc brake calipers and larger discs fitted with Porsche-patented cooling ducts. The ABS brake system was also modified to achieve a faster and more sensitive control response. It is also lightweight and provides greater stability for ABS braking. Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake discs, standard on the 911 GT2, can be fitted on request.
Priced at $99,900 in the United States, the car will be available at North American Porsche dealerships by May 2003.
hmm.. that is very nicely priced...

I predict most of these will go to racers with a few posers sprinkled in between.
but I wouldn't mind one

I like that car...especially since it is N/A (I am not a huge fan of turbos or SC) And at a price of $99,000 is something I might be able to attain in a couple years (wife will have a say) since I already know I cannot fit into an NSX...maybe the next NSX will be bigger.

With the spec that it has, there's no other car that can match its price/performance ratio. 6 piston brakes? damn, that's alot of piston... hehehe

anyways, the one option i'd add to that bad boy is the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake discs. they are something else alright.

yeah, i meant pistons.
It's almost a bargain at $99,000. That's what the price essentially was for the 993 911 Turbo with 400HP and nearly identical performance.
It'd take the GT3 over the Turbo. The 911 Turbo has the "heater-exchange look" that just doesn't do it for me. Plus Turbo lag, and the inevitable wear the Turbo causes on the engine just doesn't justify the price for me.
Unfortunately, I don't know how many they're building: probably not a hell of a lot.
Ceramic disc brake option is a good idea, although probably not the best for street use. I wonder if "upon request" means an expensive option.
Oh, and I'd take a GT2 over the GT3 without blinking.

I'm not a fan of their styling more often than not.
