well, i'd say my $45 radar/laser detector in addition to my 'spidy-sense' has served me quite well over the years
unless i'm driving my truck, i average 10+ mph over the speedlimit (20+ if i'm on a long road trip)
oh and btw, i drive the speed i feel is safe (taking into consideration road conditions and the capabilities of my vehicles)
the speed limit is for communists!

The Escort ZR1 laser shifter is a system that can see the laser from the gun, and instantly send back another laser signal back to the gun, giving blank reading to the officer. There are 2 receiver/transponders for the front, and one for the rear. They must be installed and integrated into the front and rear bumpers. A really good custom car installation place should be the only people to attempt this.
Now, everthing I've read about the ZR1 is that it really does work. The thing is, price justification. You would need to have at least 2 tickets saved (with laser, that is) to justify the 500.00 out the door installation.
One more thing..... I have an 8500 Escort Passport, and while I like it alot, if I had it to do all over again, I would have gotten a V1. The are the best, hands down.

I would strongly suggest a laser jammer. When your V1 warns you of a laser trap....you are already in it, and the jerk clocking you already knows exactly how fast you are going.
We have three cars and 2 motorcycles. Each vehicle has a jammer and I use the Valentine 1 with the remote display and my wife uses the Passport Z50 (with the new blue led's)
Laser Jammers do work!
There are currently 2 on the market today that work very well. Escort makes one, and also a Danish company by the name of Blinder makes another. I have used both and I must say that the Escort looks "cooler" but the Blinder works better and has been proven in tests to be more effective.
It is also cheaper.
Bonus.....Blinder will also pick up the tab if you actually do get a ticket.
FWIW...if you can install a car stereo....you can install a Blinder jammer system.
As for the Valentine 1/Passport debate......we have one of each and after using both for a fair amount of time.....I have to say that the V1 is a better unit hands down.
They will both warn you of radar and tell you that you are being monitored by laser, however the directional arrows on the V1 are worth their weight in Gold. The V1 has more usable features and I feel is actaully made better (mag case material). The remote display available for the V1 is well thought out and very usefull also compared to the Passports. I just purchased the Passport Z50 and can't justify the price increase over the last version of the passport.
If the V1 becomes out dated, you can send it back to the factory to have it updated for a fee as opposed to buying a new unit with the other brands.
For what it is worth. I wouldn't be caught dead without my V1 radar detector or Blinder M20 laser jammer.
Here is a link to last years Speed labs test of radar detectors and laser jammers. The results are interesting considering they are an independant company and they are more oriented with law enforcement needs than ours.

Here is a laser jammer evaluation.....
