Painted my car today...
My Dad and I painted my car today. It's a 95 with around 145,000 miles. Both rear quarter panels were rusted out. One was almost entirely replaced, the other was patched. I also fixed numerious dents and dings as well as shaving the antenna, side door molding, emblems, and rear door handle. Everything was welded (gotta do it right) but the body work was a bitch because I had some warping from the welding. I did everything but the welding myself because I don't have a MIG welder (yet). The paint is Omni which is made by PPG and I added some ice pearl from House of Kolor. The color is same as stock. Anyone know the name of it? It's dark grey with some pearl which gives it a dark navy blue look. I painted the side skirts and some other moldings to match. I also used a gallon of clear on it. Dust owns me though. I have a lot of buffing to do but after that I'll have a nice glass finish. I'll post more pics when the car is back together. BTW, I'm lowering it Wednesday so don't get yer panties in a bunch... :naughty:
Also, I posted some pics of my progress in the DIY Forum... see'em here.

Yeah, clear was still wet and the flash of the camera plus the lighting were not ideal. We sprayed an extra coat of clear because I'm gonna buff that bitch till it's like glass.
I'm going to wet sand with 2000 grit sandpaper by hand. I wouldn't recommend doing that unless you've got extra clear sprayed on. Otherwise, if you sand too much and sand through the clear you're fuct. My car won't be waxed till late in the fall so the clear has adequate time to cure. ... and nooooo silicon based products.
hey AnthonyM16. i live in philly, how far away are you? i also go to penn state university park. i drive the same car as you but in white/2 doors. wanna help me paint a pair of fenders and a front bumper? :naughty:
HA, I just got back from Philly myself. I Actually dont recommend that you sand sown the clear with the 2000 cause afterwards, ure gonna have to use a rubbing compund which is gonna take off a lot of the clear u put on. just let it sit for a while and wait for the curing process to complete. and its kinda funny cause when i finished painting my car last month, it turned out glossy from the first minute i got it on. Did you lay on the clear coat thick or multiple coats of thin? cause if it were the thin, you F'ed up. Du Pont and transtar recommends that you lay on a layer 2.2-3.6 mils thick within 2-3 coats (meaning the layers will still have to be flowing when applying # 2+3 coats). itll still be ok, but not the quality finish that you can get.
