Well, did you check your oil level with the dipstick? Run the car for a few seconds, shut it off, wait 10 or 20 minutes for the oil to drain back into the pan.

I saw a topic on oil changes and decided to pop in because I came across a neat tid-bit for anyone looking to increase their oil filter capacity. I have a 92 Accord EX with the factory F22A6 (2.2 SOHC non-VTEC) and I think the factory oil filter is too small. So, a quick bit of research showed me that the oil filter for a similar year Acura Legend has the same thread, seal size, and case diameter as my stock filter, but has more than 150% the capacity of the Accord filter. The cost was the same to me at the parts store ($5.99,) and it fit great, still with more than ample room to fit my band-type fliter wrench around it. As a side note, I use Purolator Pure-One oil filters with Mobil 1 5w30 Synthetic (though I was a diehard Castrol Syntec 5w50 user with my domestic V8 cars, but I do think the Mobil 1 is better.) I do primarily highway driving (at least 40 miles at a time) and change my oil about every 5000 miles. Two oil changes ago, I decided to try Slick 50 for my engine and automatic transmission, and have been very happy so far. The engine revs easily (and more spirited than before) and the transmission is doing much better (my trans fluid gets changed every 25,000 miles,) with quicker shifts and less "gear hunting." Good stuff, seems like it will be a while before I have a good JDM H22/auto with LSD excuse.

Why is it a factor if your engine has been using syntheic in the past?

I use Mobil 1 oil, 5w-30 year round which is the recommended weight in our area or year round use. In the winter I occasionally use 0w-30. I also use Purolator Pure One filters. They use really goodfilter media for less than half the price of Mobil 1 filters which cost over $10.

Do you know if the bypass valve opens at the same pressure?

Just 'cause it has more 'capacity', it might be an empty can. Are you talking about how many ml of oil is held by the filter, or actually how much filter media is actually in there?

yea, i'm worried about the bypass valve pressure of oversized filters too. Mobil 1 M-104 is the size recommended, M-105 will fit, same o-ring gasket size, but a considerably larger filter. I don't know about the bypass specs thou..

anyone know the OEM spec for bypass valve pressure (oil that is)????

I use hastings filters (or balwdwin as they are supposed to be exactly the same), but... they list 20psi bypass for LF-402 for 94-96 accords which I use now, but oddly a larger diameter filter w/ 14psi bypass for 97 accords and 97-99 CL's. I'd like to know if there was a diff OEM spec... and if it would be safe to use the larger filter.

This is prob a DUH! sort of post, but just in case, don't try to tighten the drain plug too much or you will be VERY unhappy if you strip it. If you knew..great....If not, hopefully i just saved you a headache.

i think the spec is around 40 ft-lbs, and USE A NEW WASHER, OEM preferably (dont reuse them), rubber if you must, and metal better than nothing.
