Default Oil changing intervals for '03 Accord

We just picked up a brand spanking new coupe it's a 4 cyl., 5 speed EX in silver. When the car comes out brand new from the factory, does Honda use a special oil for the break-in period or is it just the normal motor oil? what is the recommended procedure for changing oil for the first time? what i mean is that, i've heard from many people that when you buy a new car, you should change the oil when you have 1000 miles on it, and then again 2000 miles later (when the car hits a total of 3000 miles) and after that you should go to the normal 3000 mile interval for changing oil. what do you guys feel about this, should i do this method or just change it when it hits 3000 miles???

also, i know this was posted already, but i can't seem to find the thread... i plan on switching over to full Mobile 1 synthetic in the near future, when is a good time to switch from regular oil to full synthetic, 5000 miles, 10,000miles, 15,000 miles, etc.????

Just wait till 3000. You really don't have to change at 3000, but it's better safe that way. Just check the color of the oil.

Dealer here in town has a sign in the service area that advises to wait until 3000 miles (might be 3500) for the first oil change and states that additives have been placed in the oil, by the factory, to assist with the break-in. Don't know if it's true or not, but you would think a dealership would advise otherwise if there was money to be made on early oil changes.

Default why not trust the manual?

I have a 2003, I drive in the city so I will change my oil at 6 months or 5,000 miles, whichever comes first. In other words, I read the manual and I will do what the manual says. It would seem to me that the people who actually built the car and built the engine know best on how to maintain the car and engine.

ya whatever, w/ the oils today having better detergents & filters doing a better job, you can't just "look" at the oil & see it being dirty.

i do a mix of city & hiway and always reach 5K by 4 months, so whenever it turns 5K it gets done. easier math than figuring out numbers divisible by 3

anybody remember that story about a Chevy truck driven 100K miles in 1yr & Pennzoil bought it for research? that vehicle was maintained & ALL records documented, w/ NO DAMAGE to moving parts. to have a good laugh, GM had ppl change their oil upto 12K miles & tranny service at 100K miles back in the 80s.
